I am not sure whether people teach dogs to fetch or dogs teach the game to people. ‘Fetch’ is a complicated command to give a dog. “Go find this object. Pick it up. Bring it here. Give it to me.” (That last step is toughest for some dogs.)The human’s instructions are much simpler. “Throw this object. Ignore the slobber and repeat.” (Ignoring the slobber is the hard part.)

My dog loved to play fetch and would harass me till I’d throw the ball. Not sure you could call that a stereotype.
