After I got my basset puppy, I was surprised at his temperament, having had boocoos of while German shepherds all my life. When I read about their character traits, the first two things on the list were “stubborn, disobedient.” :D I loved my Barney to pieces and he was an exceptionally good dog all his life. He hated to hear “bad dog” and would protest. When I said, “Where’s my GOOD dog?” he would get over his snit.

Fred, you are quite active with all your soccer, running over the heath, chasing bunnies, doing some gym while snatching sausages, stealing your bones back from Jock or take his from him, digging up the vegetable patches…So, sometimes your Vet calls you “sturdy”.But we all do love you just the way you are :-*

Most days you seem very active running around with your pals, but you’re definitely motivated by food; especially sausages

One of my pet peeves in the real world – please folks, learn about the breed you’re interested in before you adopt one. Otherwise, you’re in for a shock when that “adorable little puppy” starts to grow up into the 80-pound tireless workhorse he was bred to be. I can’t help thinking of the unwitting folks who got an adorable GSD puppy … then sent him to a shelter when he was about 4 months old because they weren’t prepared to care for him or train him not to bark all night, or the “doodle” owners who don’t think their dog needs professional grooming – until its coat is a matted mess.

Bassets don’t care what they eat. My cousins had one who was fond of socks.

When I was a kid growing up in Ohio I saw a neighbor’s basset put on some speed and catch a RABBIT. That was one athletic dog. I wish I could remember his name…
