I’ll admit, I thought she got hurt because Pig never calls and she was so shocked, she whipped back so fast, Pig broke his mama’s back. The stepping on the crack is so much better, and I’ll have that song in my head for awhile now, too. Thanks. (psst…if you can, call your mama).
Stephan has it wrong. It’s “Step on a line, break your mother’s spine. Step on a crack, break the Devil’s back.” Since he’s on a line, his mom should be complaining of her spine.
Little bit of a continuity problem Steph. When Pig learns that his mother has broken her back, he’s standing in the field. Only later is he standing on a crack in the sidewalk, which means it could not have been the cause of the injury (never minding the ridiculousness of that superstition anyway).
I remember throwing a party for my parents’ 40th Wedding Anniversary; rented a hall, sent engraved invitations to all their friends and family, a dinner, champagne, big cake, the works. It was a pretty jolly affair, all in all, until as it was winding down, I asked my mother how she liked it. She looked at me and said, “You didn’t wear a tie.”

Little mishap while changing the scenery. At least Pig got rid of the wig and the glasses in time.

I am 67 and my mother is gone, but I still think about that rhyme when walking on a sidewalk. You never forget what you learn in kindergarten.

It’s not your fault, Pig. These things just happen when you get on in years.

But he’s standing in the field in the first panel, and doesn’t step on the crack until his mother has ALREADY said she broke her back. I don’t get it.
