High-wheelers (Penny Farthing bicycles) are cool to ride until you have to put on the brakes. Many face-plants, many broken necks. That’s why the modern design using smaller wheels and a chain was originally called the “safety bicycle”. https://youtu.be/8HRpVV_x3N4
You know, I’ve always wondered, why such model for bicycles evolved even? Like, why didn’t people think of 2 equal wheels right away when they invented the bicycle? Why did they make a bigger and smaller wheel and took them a while to make them equal? What’s the physics or reasons for such a big wheel in front?
Looks like, even in BC’s days, guys would find ways to spend 30 or 40 times what was necessary for an ego-gratifying vehicle (vs one that simply provided personal transportation)…

I like it. However, in truth, I have never understood the big wheel in front bike from the old days. I mean, why?

THAT’S a design that would actually move. [Unlike the old design.]

My husband liked the higher handle bars. He put them out bikes and made them easier to ride, not having to bend over while riding.

Well, he can peddle the big one, but I don’t see any way to pedal a single wheel.

Frederick, Maryland has a penny-farthing race every summer. This year it’s going to be on July 16.
