I dated a professional musician for a while. She played everything from oboe to guitar and could sing anything from opera to rock and roll. She completely supported herself by playing in orchestras and rock bands. One day while I was watching her at public guitar performance, one of the strings broke. She immediately transposed to another key and finished the song. If I had not been watching the guitar, I probably would not have noticed.

Can you imagine performing on stage and having everyone see your G-string break?

Leo Kottke broke a string in a song for his first album (6 and 12 String Guitar). It sounded good so he left it in.
