I like those old-style ampersands. It’s actually “Et” – latin for “and.” I’m not sure how or why it changed into the modern one. The word itself is “and per se ‘and’.”
Oooh! I LOVE Ampersands! Reminds me of the Calligrapy I used to do…squiggles, curves and loops! It takes practice and I always used a bookmark to keep my place in the pages of learning….one must do a lot of connecting and inclusions with Ampersands and Calligaphy ! There’s no straight lines, like a green bean standing on end….straight and narrow…..
My friend and I are like two peas in a pod… we both like to write and draw and express our talent on paper…..
OMG! I confess it’s been a few days since I visited the Blog, but to hear from long lost friend and faithful commenter Margueritem is a very special treat. If you’re scanning FA these days, Marg, here’s a shoutout! I miss you.
Oooh!! coltish1 mentioned the Blog, which reminded me of a cool series of photos there right now, showing plant pots — no, not the other way round!! — saying things like ’Say Aloe to My Little Friend’!!
Ampersands are our friends! I could never make a real ampersand, though. I would have to be content with a squiggly E and a line through it top to bottom. But my keyboard gives me &, & I’m happy with it.
—In which Sister takes a deep dive into Latin palaeography. Ampersand is a ligature of “et,” the Latin word for “and.” Ligatures are scribal shortcuts for frequently used words or phrases.
Green beans are tasty, and make a nice, colorful, green background for the et-ligatures. Green beans are (part of) what I “et” yesterday.
Bookmarks are mostly irrelevant to this discussion, but a token one serves as an index to the bookish nature of this discussion.
For better or for worse, tomes on Latin palaeography are among the dustiest and least-circulated in the venerable Old Wing of the Froglandia Bathmat Factory Library (also referred to as the Froglandia National Library colloquially)….

Ooooh!! I adore ampersands!! I even have one for hanging at home!!
Not that I’m using the loops it makes as things to hold it up on nails!! /gasp!/ That would be tragic!!

Some of these are very elaborate. I dislike ampersands. I don’t know why. I NEVER use them in writing. NEVER.
