Ah… the pesky mondegreen. For those unfamiliar with the term it is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase in a way that gives it a new meaning, most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to hear a lyric clearly, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense. American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954, writing that as a girl, when her mother read to her from Thomas Percy’s 1765 book Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, she had misheard the lyric “layd him on the green” as “Lady Mondegreen”. Cola is the big arm-length stalk of cannabis flowers and colita is an individual cannabis flower! So, the band is singing about the scent of flowers in the night air. Beautiful.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

mondegreen for sure, although it was the “warm smell of colitas” line that puzzled me for years… not being from California

I have lately been hearing a song about a “Mexican Monkey”, then I saw that the title was “All night to get lucky” in the radio’s data field.
