This is cute, but sanctions beat tanks over the medium and long term. IF they can be deployed in sufficient number and on time.

Oh, that Biden! He’s so weak and helpless that he’s letting Putin walk all over him and at the same time, he’s facing up to Putin with sanctions and trying to start a nucular war.

    Both at the same time.

Putin will successfully leverage this situation, created by him, to gain concessions from the west. A weak US president and a divided NATO is an opportunity that a tyrant cannot ignore. I do hope I’m wrong. And no, I do not want US boots on the ground in Ukraine.

Re-institute the draft. The children of defense contractors and politicians should be first on the list. Graduates from Harvard and Yale should fill in just to keep the military educated, if not necessarily smart.

Why not have an election instead of a war. Russia believes that about half of Ukraine should never have been Ukraine in the first place. The people in those areas speak Russian, and would possibly vote to become part of Russia if given a choice. So, elections, monitored by Russian and NATO forces. Those areas that choose to become Russian, become Russia. Those people living in those areas who want to move to Ukraine, buy them out. It’s got to be cheaper to do that then to fight a war.

The most effective thing the West could do to threaten Russia is to seize all their assets in Western nations. No more Paris, London and New York apartments. No more billions stashed in Western banks and stock markets. Relieve Putin of some of his billions.

Of course sanctions will be delayed/reduced as the Putin puppets in the Rethuglican Party play their game.

The first tool in the diplomatic tool box is not military force. Acting tough is an act of overcompensation. Russia is fully aware that the US has a more powerful better supplied military.

It seems that Biden is getting the upper hand right now since Putin is finding he may need an off-ramp before this whole thing backfires on him.

Over the next 3 years, Xi and Putin will be manufacturing as many controversial crises they can to make Biden look as week as possible. They would like nothing better than a return of Czar Trump.

Repost: A bit different this time. The nations near Ukraine are inviting NATO troops in, even neutral Moldova. Both Finland and Sweden are reconsidering membership in NATO. As far as sanctions go, Britain is discussing with the United States the possibility of banning Russia from the SWIFT global payments system. Biden has said that he will sanction Putin directly. Putin may lose this gamble big time if the West remains united in opposition.

Actually, the USA military has always been the better military. However, here’s hoping diplomacy wins and Putin realizes his demands are ridiculous.

Brandon is a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest. Russia will roll through Ukraine like we rolled through Iraq. Then what? All the javelins in the world won’t defeat Airpower, ours won’t be near as effective it’s not like we will sail the 7th fleet into the Black Sea.

Spain has sent warships to join NATO naval forces in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea as tension in the region rises, Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Thursday.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said Russia would pay a heavy price if it chose to attack Ukraine, even as he welcomed dialogue with Moscow. He has also expressed his country’s readiness to deploy troops to Romania to serve under NATO’s command, a move welcomed by Bucharest.

In February, “a complete field hospital will be handed over, including the necessary training, all co-financed by Germany to the tune of 5.3 million euros [$6m]”, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht recently told reporters. “Weapons deliveries would not be helpful at the moment – that is the consensus in the federal government,” she said.

Finland, which is not a member of NATO and has a long border and a difficult history with Russia, has enhanced its military readiness in the face of Russia’s military buildup.

President Klaus Iohannis said Romania is in talks with the US and France on how to enhance their troop count in his country, which he said was ready to host an increased NATO military presence.
