I get the feeling that Stahler thinks “serious sanctions” is funny. I think it’s a reasoned response to the current situation (as far as I understand it)… And I’m very VERY happy to have some professionals handling all this instead of if Putin had done it a couple of years ago or so.
I issued this challenge to another idiot cartoonist yesterday. so in the interest of equal time I’ll give Jeff the same opportunity:
“Yeah, Jeff. I’m with you on this one. I really wish Biden would present details of the strong definitive action he will use to stop Putin from invading the Ukraine. Mind you that action should be cheap in cost and involve no bloodshed and be absolutely certain to produce nothing but shining success. Why don’t you, being the cartooning genius you are, just outline the appropriate action in tomorrow’s cartoon and all of us who see it will call the White House and make sure Biden has the opportunity to learn from you and become a true hero of democracy. C’mon, man. Do that one minor favor for the world.”
The most effective thing the West could do to threaten Russia is to seize all their assets in Western nations. No more Paris, London and New York apartments. No more billions stashed in Western banks and stock markets. Relieve Putin of some of his billions.

Serious sanctions will have a profound effect on Russia and Putin.
Unfortunately, it may also involve some inconvenience to American businesses — which means it will be worse than the holocaust… just like masks.

If not sanctions then what? War? That would be the only option left.

War is good for business. Sanctions are bad for business. Now we see who runs this country.

Here’s one sanction that should cut deep:
Britain was discussing with the United States the possibility of banning Russia from the SWIFT global payments system.
That means closing the bank for Russia.
