Marigold is not wrong about the “pure spite” part.

The relationship between mount and rider can be complicated. I remember when the online game Wizard101 released a special mount to celebrate April Fools day. It was a donkey, but instead of riding it, the player carried it on their shoulders. And somehow, it still gave them a speed boost.
