No one thinks about the big picture these days, it’s always, I do this for you and you do this for me. With the cycle time pretty short. The worst embodiment of this was your previous president.
Without it I doubt Europa would have enjoyed this much time at peace.
I’ll admit that in the short term it’s probably in the USA’s interest to allow this to happen. It removes a significant competitor from international influence (EU trade and political power) it’s also good for the US’ Military Industrial complex. However these things come back to bite you in the ass, overall trade suffers, and generally the US tends to get dragged in. I don’t think I need to cite examples.
Obviously this is a re-telling of “Peter and the Wolf,” except Putin is Peter AND the Wolf. And Ukraine will soon be quacking once again inside Russia’s stomach.
I’ve been there: Odessa, the Crimea, the Black Sea, Yalta and those glorious Potemkin steps that started a revolution. It is a beautiful area of the world, free then when I visited.
So easy to mock a dangerous international situation. So, OK, let’s mass few hundreds thousands NATO troops on Ukraine borders, send a few battleships with USS Nimitz in the Black Sea (never mind Crimea) and wait for the russian bully next move… AND practice your “duck and cover”, from the 1950s cold war routine…
We have two choices, threaten more sanctions, or WW3. Danziger and the defense industry favor war. That’s where the money is, and no draft to threaten rich kids.
Putin wants Ukraine again, make no mistake about it. He is especially incensed that former parts of the USSR are now in NATO; he thought he had agreements that NATO would not be extended eastward to the borders of Russia.
I must point out that the fox/wolf/dog is not attacking the bird because of anything the bird did or didn’t do but because that’s what a fox/wolf/dog would do in order to live… the bird is food. Putin is going after Ukraine for himself and power.
Sorry, Mr. D. We don’t need to waste more of our blood and money on someplace where we have no national interest. If Ukraine want to buy arms from us, fine, but it’s not our war.
I really don’t understand why Putin is concerned over NATO. Putin though is living in the past, back to his good ole days of the USSR and longing to return to it, much like Dump and his Make America Great Again pitch. Putin’s real fear should be focused on the economic response the West will exact against him should he be foolish enough to want to push his borders back to the USSR days.
And the acquisition of Ukraine, what is to be gained by that? True, that land has been historically connected to Mother Russia, and the Ukraine was their bread basket. But, with climate change, even parts of Siberia might become a new bread basket and the potential for that area is tremendous.
Perhaps, instead of using the stick to beat back Putin, the West ought to use a carrot to encourage him to pursue a new Russia that could lead the world.

We’ll let NATO take care of it. We’ll be along to help presently . . . or maybe eventually . . .

We should have hung NATO out to dry long time ago. How does it benefit us, being a member?

Putin invading the Ukraine would provide a powerful argument for joining NATO
