If only the hospitals hadn’t fired the staff who refused to be vaccinated.

The staff is missing because they refused to be vaccinated, and got covid. Did not get fired. Now they can continue to work, even if they test positive, if they don’t have symptoms. Stay away from health care workers, if at all possible.

The shortage of staff will not be from the unvaxxed per se, but from those calling in sick. Of course, the unvaxxed will make up the more seriously ill workers, but all workers, vaxxed and unvaxxed, are vulnerable to omicron. As Dr. Fauci stated yesterday, expect that all of us are likely to get omicron sooner or later. It is highly infectious.

From what I am hearing from friends and relatives in health care and from the information sources that can be trusted (not Faux news or msnbc for instance, especially the former) the biggest problems are quitting because of total burnout and absenteeism because of the Omicron variant. For the later it’s not much worse than a mild cold for those who are vaccinated, but they have to stay away from work because of the risk of infecting the unvaccinated, for whom it can be lethal even though it’s not nearly as bad as earlier variants.

The latest: the ‘Supreme Court’ has ruled that healthcare workers can be required to be vaccinated, if they work with Medicare or Medicaid. Now let’s hope that gets enforced.

I’ve come down with Omicron (and I’m triple vaxxed). Luckily, it’s very mild (so far), tired, dry cough, somewhat achey, typical cold symptoms. I’ve been extremely cautious since the beginning of this pandemic, including masking up when babysitting my granddaughter. Unfortunately, this Omicron is so highly contagious that she brought it home from school (during the first week back at school after Christmas). She was masked and I was masked, but we still shared our airspace. Both her parents are sick now (double-vaxxed, waiting for their booster). SHE bounced back extremely quickly, she was only sick for a couple of days and now she’s full of beans and driving them crazy, but still in quarantine. Everyone’s immune system responds different to this virus, I guess. I’m doing the self-quarantine for two weeks (or longer.). Fingers crossed that this doesn’t get worse. :P
