Microspikes for hiking, crampons for seep ice and lesser spikes for sidewalks.

When I was a kid, a friend had a homemade set. He (or his dad) had heated a pair of triangular teeth from a hay mower red hot and bent down the sharp points about a centimetre. They had 2 holes at the base of the triangles which facilitated tying them securely to his boots with skate laces. We were amazed when he demonstrated them on the pond where we skated.

This is a perfect example of why my grandfather semi-retired and moved to Florida from the snowbelt, when he was still in his late 40s. Of course back then companies had actual retirement plans and pensions for their employees. A reward for years of good service… but that’s another story.
