I think the Woman is going to have to model eating it for them, and ultimately be the ONLY one to eat any of it at all.

Once you figure out what the kits like, it is best to not deviate from the plan. Our first cat, as a family; he actually loved the Dog’s food. The dog would happily eat the cat’s food and let him eat his from his plate. I don’t think my wife ever caught on to their little deception.

Of course, the cat’s food seemed to be just one tongue full for the dog. I don’t recall what the brand was, but it was wet, and Morris apparently loved it too. (Friskies?)

Ah, Woman, hope springs eternal. Little do you know the cats’ plans. And how familiar is that cross-legged position on the floor, trying to get kitties to eat! (although in my personal memories it was sick kitties, not because I fed them garbage)

Darryl Hall and John Oates: I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)

A new food appears when it’s feeding time

    Where does it stop,

When our old food was just fine

I don’t want this new stuff,

    In my supper bowl,

    Don’t even think about it,

    Say no go.

    …….

    I— I ’ll eat anything

    that you want me to

    Yes I’ll eat almost anything,

That you want me too, ooh,

    …….

But I can’t go for that, (This can of food)

No, I can’t go for that, (This can of food)

Oh, I can’t go for that, (This can of food)

    …….

    I can’t go for that,

    Can’t go for that,

    Can’t go for that.

    …….

I can go for a nice ham slice,

I can go for just bacon

    ’Most any time

I don’t want this new stuff,

    In my supper bowl,

    Don’t even think about it,

    Say no go.

    …….

    I— I ’ll eat anything

    that you want me to

    Yes I’ll eat almost anything,

I found my boys will eat almost anything. It’s the girl who’s picky, and they just discontinued her favorite – Fancy Feast Medly Ocean Whitefish in Cheesy Bechemel Sauce. She’s very small and loosing any weight is a problem. The vet is always making my husband feel guilty about her not eating enough, but he’ll even sit there and hold the bowl for her if that will get her to eat more. But you can’t force them.

Should old great cat food be forgot,

    and never brought to mind?

Should cats spurn new food that’s bought,

    for auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

    For auld lang syne,

Will Lupin smear the yucky food yet,

    For auld lang syne.

And surely she’ll buy the old food then!

The stuff for which they pine!

Then they’ll eat bowls o’good food yet,

    Just like auld lang syne.

As long as the old food is still available, a less-palatable new food is going to sit until it rots. Cats is cats.

Best thing to do when introducing new food is mix it in with the old food. 3/4 old, 1/4 new. And over time, increase the new food and decrease the old food. Before you know it, it’ll be the new food.

When my loving wife finally got the Oriental Short hair kittens she wanted, she tried to give them the “good” canned food. They didn’t like any of them, not food driven. We had many cats in the 35 years we were together and the majority absolutely devoured canned food and even some Human food too. Not these 2. Maybe my loving wife would have been able to figure it out if she had more time but when she died they had just turned 1 year old. I have said before they are unlike any other cats we ever had.

My apparently ADDICT cats are accustomed to 9 Lives Ocean Whitefish. Currently unavailable so I bought a 36 count of 9 Lives assorted. When I “plop” it into their dishes the cats look at it and then look at me with their expressions clearly saying “My name is Karen and I want to speak to your Manager”…sigh

Update has finally finished her shots and on the 10th of January she will go in for her upgrade to Female 2.0. I’m also going to have her chipped as she thinks that if Reboot can escape, she can as well. After her last shot, we took her by Pet Smart and got her a kitten sized harness, collar, and leash. She still absolutely loves riding in the car even when she ends up at the dreaded V.E.T. and gets a shot. She hates riding in the box though so a leash and harness seemed like a good compromise.

This is how not you switch a cat’s food. The best way to adjust a cat to a new flavor is to mix in a little of the new food into their old food at a time until they are used to it. A sudden switch in food can also cause digestion problems.

     •  Reply
  55. Scorpleopard
Diana Gregory Premium Member over 2 years ago

Of course, unless you are medically switching foods (allergy found; diabetes; kidneys; etc), you should never just abruptly start a new food. With wet, mix a tablespoon into the old food, then 2, etc., until it’s all new food.

Abrupt changes – some may take to the new – most cats will do as this arc is showing; worst case is vomiting and diarrhea.
