I remember working in an office and noticing that every Black woman had straightened hair, every White and Asian woman had permed hair, and me, I had my hair hidden in a beret. To top it off Black women risk their health with toxic “vanishing cream” to lighten their skin, while White women risk their health in tanning booths darkening it. Wealthy Black women will go under the knife to thin down their lips while wealthy White women get injections to plump theirs up. PEOPLE, YOU’RE ALL BEAUTIFUL! STOP HATING WHO YOU ARE!

Luann’s head is drawn too large for her body and that is what distorts and emphasizes the use of makeup. Bernice is in proportion, but she still looks like a 12 year old.

This is a variation of a gag Greg did back when Luann was 13. Back then she did not know anything about putting on make-up so the clown make-up joke was funny. Now that Luann is quoted as being 19 it’s just sad.

More often than not, the stand-alone Sunday strips rely on caricatures that make one or more of the characters look particularly immature, inept, lazy, or buffoonish – in a way that’s often out of sync with the ongoing story lines. I think it’s time for G&K to drop the Sunday strip and just focus on the dailies.

They still have a mall? I thought most malls these days were either closed or mostly used by mall walkers who walk past all the shuttered stores and the few shops that are still open and struggling to survive.

There are still some malls out there that are doing well but far fewer than there used to be. I don’t think young people go there to hang out any more.

I guess it’s not so much the color of your skin but what you put ON it. Right, Luann? It’s an interesting comment, not so much about race, but about our perceptions of beauty and what constitutes that at any given time in human history.

How about it gang? Do any of YOU judge people by the color of their skin? I honestly don’t think I do. My father raised me to be better than that. However, being of a certain color doesn’t give you an automatic “pass” in my book either. You have to earn my friendship and respect by showing me who you really are. No excuses! There are awesome people of every color and culture and there are also awful people of every color and culture. Use your own good sense to sort them out and stand by your friends no matter what the color of their skin.

Honestly, I can relate. Most “beauty” standards are always implying that blue/green eyes, blonde hair, and fair skin is typically “perfect” and many, and by that I mean MANY ads about getting “perfect hair” or “perfect eye color” are there. I don’t know HOW many of those ads have ruined me as a child, and they still do today. I’m just a kid alright? I have olive-ish skin, dark brown eyes, and dark brown hair. That’s my genes, and I don’t want to change it. God it’s become so toxic nowadays.

I am not sure why GE bothered with this. Delta was booted out of this strip years ago. Dez and Bets are minor characters at best, not even in the basic orbit of the titular character. There has never been a male POC depicted that I can recall. A single annual allusion to MLK day that turns into a joke about makeup is not really striving for change or understanding.
