In 1980 the average inflation rate was 13.55 %. More than double what it was now and the effects exacerbated by Reagan & Company. Union busting and the shipping of jobs overseas was going into high gear in the 80’s as well as interest rates going through the roof. The Elephant in the room was busy squashing the 800 lb. ape as far as promoting misery. Yet as a young man, I was impressed by the compassion, self-sacrifice, and optimistism so many had back then to make sure their kids and loved ones had a Merry Christmas. Many found themselves out of work and unable to afford much, but their hearts were magnificently huge.
Whatever happened to home-made gifts? Or event gifts? Sometimes they’re even better. Get your creative hats on, people! The prices will come down after Christmas, anyway.
Inflation doesn’t appear to be affecting the annual buying frenzy in any noticeable way. But it has provided conservatives with something to chirp about other than the “war on Christmas” phooey.
The barrage of “Buy It Now!” has been blasting since about Labor Day, accompanied by dire warnings of supply chain issues, item shortages, and a new Covid variant emerging. It would seem that even the politically correct greeting, “Happy Holidays,” has become an oxymoron.
Reality check: In 1973 I got a used car loan (Torino GT) and paid 16% interest. 10 years later my first home mortgage rate was one of the cheapest at 15.9%. Our life insurance cash value rate was and still is guaranteed at the lowest rate back then of 4.5%. We lived through all that and did just fine.

I love how CONSISTENT the right wingers are. It’s almost as though they were all taking direction from a central source.

Yeah, gee, Ariall, nobody is spending anything this year. And there’s nothing on the shelves anyway, right?

No sense looking at any actual DATA, right?

Same old trope. Inflation is a global issue due to Covid creating dwindling supplies for those who have increasing demands.

If Trump is such the great savior of Christmas, and is “the actual elected President”, why he is not fixing this?
