Releasing gas from our emergency reserve supply is like putting a bandaid on an open wound. OPEC needs to increase their output, but have said, “No” for now. They reduced their supply to us at the former guy’s request. He is happy to have caused problems for Biden. Approving more drilling doesn’t help at all at the present time. This isn’t just our fault and we need to understand that we can’t make the only solution. Supply chains were disrupted for everything. The whole world is suffering from rising inflation and gas prices as demand increases. Economies are opening up. Covid-19 is getting more under control. This is good news in the long run.
There are long-term and short-term issues. Both are necessary to address. The short-term issue is that the prices of gas — globally — have risen sharply, negatively impacting the most people who have fewer resources. Tapping into the strategic reserve helps them. The long-term issue is getting us off of fossil fuels altogether. He actually CAN work on both at the same time.
And “this” is why dependency on fossil fuel will be forever. No one wants/will pay the price to give it up. And.. to the hypocrites that say we should.. feel free to turn off the gas to your home and pull the fuses from the electric panel.
Sure wish the US oil producers/industry would zero out their taxes and subsidies. If we really want to cut back on fossil product usage (oil and plastic) dump the subsidies
With the new South African variant emerging and an eruption of cases in Europe and Northern and North East states, governments and the stock markets are again anticipating a winter surge of cases. Oil futures are down and stock markets are also down today. Quit listening to chicken little, Matt. The republikkkans like nothing more than to be alarmist to discredit President Biden over every little blip in prices, economic news or political information.
Why should the Federal Government intervene in the free market? When i had my first job I earned $3.35 per hour and Gas was 1.65 Now the min wage is 7.25 per hour and Gas is 3.05
That doesn’t even account for the fact that my first car got 10 miles per gallon and now the an average cheap first car will get about 30.
By the way …. does anyone remember when we invaded Iraq and gas spiked at $4.00 / Gal.
Yeah, Matt got us Dems there. And I can’t understand Joe’s flip/flop in a time of such a great need for cut backs of CO2 levels. I thought letting the gas prices go up was one suggestion to decrease the use of ICE vehicles and thus reduce CO2 levels. I suspect Brother Joe, being a lifelong politician, is trying to positively effect his poll numbers even if it means advancing climate change another notch. We, his supporters, and most of the world leaders, are scratching our/their heads is dismay.
European countries fuel prices are 2x that of that in the US, prices should increase here, if you can’t afford the price of gas maybe you should drive these gas guzzling pick ups that are the size of tractor trailers
Americans can’t handle the truth…we are soooo very spoiled that we can’t handle cutting back or doing with less of our entitled right to the “cheap energy” that is killing our planet. Booo hooo… COP26 was a farce. No one was willing to step up…no one was going to do more than blah blah blah…too bad, so sad…kiss our a$$e$ bye bye…maybe the next apex species will …but maybe there won’t be any species to survive to take our place…hmmm….maybe Gaia will just become another lifeless failed planet.
This is exactly the problem. We complain about oil companies while filling up our 12-mpg tanks….er…pickup trucks. The US uses more energy than any other country on the planet. We’re not victims; we’re perpetrators.
Has anyone thought this out? First there are farmers with acres of fields to plow and harvest. When wheat and soybeans are ready, harvesting becomes a 24 hour event. With EVs this will take twice as long cutting production.
For long trips where there is no public transportation you will need acres of charging stations.
Electric delivery is far from reliable in States like California. Where I live in Michigan, more than half of my neighborhood has generators.
Lowering the price of gasoline has only a very minor impact on the amount of fossil fuels we burn (and therefore on our environment) but a potentially HUGE positive impact on our economy. The gasoline market is highly price-inflexible — we will still consume the same amount regardless of the price because we will continue to go everywhere in our cars we intended to go anyhow. But when fuel prices are higher, we have less to spend on everything else, which harms our overall economy.
To burn less fossil fuels we need more efficient automobiles and ones that can run on renewable resources, and we are doing a pretty good job transitioning in that direction (although I wish it were a bit more rapid).
Biden’s two infrastructure bills had a lot of provisions to speed up this transition, but they had to be cut at the insistence of Joe Manchin, the bulk of whose income and campaign contributions come from the fossil fuel industry.

We need to transition to greener fuels yes. We don’t need to make poor people poorer while making that transition.
Until there are more charging stations available and electric cars themselves become more affordable, fuel needs to be kept affordable.

Had we followed Carter’s lead decades ago we and our planet would be much better off today.

Change is necessary. Change is hard. Change requires adjustments. Change costs. Change is inevitable. Biden’s caught in a hard place.

Wuerker,
It’s one thing to say that opening the oil reserves was bad. It’s another to say that it was done as an attempt to gain popularity.
Right or wrong, Biden made the decision for the good of the country, not himself.
Attack the problem. Not the guy trying to solve the problem.

$8 to $10 equivalent per gallon in Europe. The USA needs to eliminate the subsidies it gives to oil companies.
