I wonder which cartoonist was the first to use the device of a character walking along, alone, and telling themselves out loud where they’re going and why. The reason for it is obvious, but when you think about it, it’s not at all realistic. I wonder this, because I still see readers who question any little thing in today’s strip that isn’t exactly like real life.
