The firefighter characterized as “slave labor prisoner” is somewhat off the mark. A recent news article described how prisoners want to volunteer and serve as firefighters as opposed to prison time. Hard work, better food, actually gaining work experience that might help when they have served their time. Definitely not to be confused with the contract workers of the “Jim Crow/chain gang” era.
