I see this cartoon as a reference to the book burnings in Germany in the early Nazi era. I am possibly wrong on this, but I’m also surprised that no one else has thus far commented on this possibility.

—) One of the books that might give the group pause is the novel “Set This House on Fire,” by William Styron. Not only is the title apropos to the cartoon, but to our country at this time. The title is taken from one of John Donne’s epigraphs —

“His mercies hath applied His judgments, and hath shaked the house, this body, with agues and palsies, and set this house on fire with fevers and calentures, and frightened the master of the house, which is my soul, with horrors, and heavy apprehensions, and so made an entrance into me.”

And maybe the group would agree with Styron when he comments through one of his characters —

“What this country needs… what this great land of ours needs is something to happen to it. Something ferocious and tragic, like what happened to Jericho or the cities of the plain – something terrible I mean, son, so that when the people have been through hellfire and the crucible, and have suffered agony enough and grief, they’ll be people again, human beings, not a bunch of smug contented cows rooting at the trough."

That sounds similar to the message the far right-wing might hope for So, burn or not to burn? Whoops — it has sex scenes, so burn!

As a participant in the Berkeley Free Speech Movement of the sixties, I still hold to the principles we fought for then. I was disappointed to hear at the 50th Reunion that some current activists no longer do, that freedom of speech (and inquiry) has fallen to political correctness.
