I’ve never understood the fascination watching grown men making millions of dollars playing children’s games

I still cry over that 73rd minute in 1989.

I saw a grown man get weepy (though with joy) watching golf. I was stunned and slightly turned off. All I could think was, “You’re weepy over a golf game?”.

Ah, Elway, Unitas, Tom Matte, Frank and Brooks Robinson . . . names to conjure with. And back then, players didn’t make a gazillion dollars a year. They pretty much earned hat the rest of us did – and we could afford to go to the games!

Both male and female Pluggers do that.

But real Pluggers do not go to games to get drunk and start fights or holler racist taunts.

Real Pluggers don’t smack the kids or their spouse because they dare to walk in front of the TV.

And they can pause or even shut off the video or the game without acting like a rabid four year old in full-blown tantrum mode. It’s still just a game to them and there are many more important things to them in their lives.

I can sympathize with that. My best memories are of the Red Sox of 1975 and also winning the World Series for the first time in many years back in 1998.

I hate it when I tune into a game and they’re playing old clips or clips for a different game. I begin to wonder if I’m on the correct channel for the game I want to watch.

I have always thought if these super-spectacles like the Super Bowl were so great, the best ones would be rerun in their entirety every year or so. The open secret is that, without betting on the outcome, at least implicitly, there would be far less interest in making heroes out of guys who bang into each other for a living.

    1. Rare skill sets command higher pay. This is true in most professions.2. Professional football is to a children’s game as a tricycle is to a sports car.3. Entertainment is – entertaining.

I’m surprised these concepts elude you. Presumably you have similar objections to movies and television.

And Elway drives the Stanford Cardinal to a last second field goal, but the fans rush out on to the field causing a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Stanford kicks off, Cal laterals the ball all over the field and scores a touchdown, winning the game. Steve Young, substituting for Joe Montana, takes a knee at the 2 yard line and the game is over. 49ers 55 and the Elway led Broncos 10 in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate. The 9ers had the 55 points and still had more than 10 minutes left in the game.

BTW, Elway is still the biggest used car salesman in Colorado.

If my husband was watching any sports game – I would double and triple and quadruple check (and maybe more) that it was him and then call the doctor. He eschews sports and will not watch or participate in any. (Though as he is always quick to point out when he or I says this – he has been to 3 World Series games back in the late 1950s/early 1960s.)
