When my parents were kids, Christmas gifts were mostly tokens… and the celebration was in the church, plus “all you want to eat”. When my cohort were kids, Christmas gifts were real, but the emphasis (from the adults) was on the church service and, yes, the edibles. When our kids were young, the emphasis was on the gifts, with some church. Now that THEY have kids (and in one case a grandkid), the church part is… gone (I’m fine with that), the food part is iffy because of dietary restrictions… and the presents are surely more 85% of the celebration.

Is Goodwyn implying that Christmas is about something other than presents?

Over the last decade I’ve had Christmas without presents. Presents are not necessary.

Does that mean the GOP will quit carping about “supply chain” issues?

Or maybe start focusing on NOT depending on a consumer economy? Maybe that’s the right approach. Our economy’s been broken for a long time depending on people going out and buying more and more stuff they don’t need.

It’s all about the stuff and commercialism and not the reason behind it, right Al?

That is why I’ve found the “Put Christ back into Christmas” bumper stickers so hypocritical

Gosh, the annual winter solstice commercial orgy might be truncated? Mammon will be disappointed.

At least Goodwyn didn’t make this about the Dem/Fem/Lib/Socialist/LGBTQ/Enviro/non-Christian/non-White wackos attacks on Christmas …/s

I actually agree with Goodwyn on this one. Christmas has become nothing more than an exercise of consumerism. If we stopped buying gifts for people our economy would crash. I don’t think that’s a good thing at all.

Buy gifts that are made in America. They’re not trapped inside shipping containers that came from overseas. Don’t you people believe in America First anymore?

Al, is there anything called “cause and effect” in your world? “The invisible hand of the free market” spent the last 50 years pushing the idea that Christmas is about: Presents. Were you pushing back on that the entire time or was that “Anti-capitalist COMMUNISM! SOCIALISM! DAMN LIBERALS!” ?

Asking for about the 3 generations of Americans who are younger than you.

I like Christmas, and if we can be just a little kinder to each other on that one day, it is worth it. However, kids wanting presents are a by-product of our consumer, marketing-driven culture.

    Kids repeat what they see.
