Meanwhile, in Ketcham Idaho, a twisting, rattling, woeful, wail emanates from a certain grave, followed by whispered words carried on the wind…

There IS a government department of weights and measures… but standards aren’t (mostly) done by the government. ANSI, ISO, IETF, etc. are NGOs. And they do very important work despite the joke that the great thing about standards is that there are so many.

What Ernest Lemmingway is deliberately doing is a childish expression of his not having any self-control in hopes of eliminating other people’s voices while trying to get away with telling blatant lies that have no factual basis whatsoever.

Everyone has their own opinions but should also be grown up enough to own their opinions, and to accept whatever consequences they bring. It’s clear that Ernest does not understand that responsibility but I hope he does soon for everyone’s sake.

Right. Much better when we spent trillions so corporations could send jobs & manufacturing off shore (leading to the current inflation and supply lines issues) and Elon Musk could afford to build his own space force.

Gee, not sure I get this one. NIST may not be widely known, but it employs smart people who do essential work. Further, if there existed such a door at NIST it would have been installed by a private-sector contractor, not by a government scientist.

Science usually requires very precise measurements and standards but the only science politicians know is political science – scare the masses with an issue then demand more taxes and power so they (and only they) can fix it. Then comes the mandates from President Brandon and the mad scientist, Fauci, who funded (with our tax $) the killing of puppies for Sand Flea research and gain-of-function research for the bat virus. The damage is immeasurable so Wiley’s comic makes sense.

Denigration of our government is a fool’s game only played by fools. The regressives have been an a jihad against government since Reagan, tearing down the country in the process. Government is essential. It will always be inefficient if it is run properly because it has to attempt to serve EVERYONE.

Government is the foundation of our country. Without the government we would have a violent chaos dominated by those with more guns and a willingness to use them to get their way.

The regressives hate our government and hate our country and everything our country used to stand for. They have done their best to tear the country apart by weakening the government, and thereby the civil society.

Our experiment in democracy is almost over because of the hatred espoused by the regressives. I’m glad I’m old, I won’t see the final denouement.

People complain about ‘standards’ until they need them. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a a science laboratory and non-regulatory agency of the US government tasked with promoting innovation and industrial competitiveness. It began as a metrology laboratory in 1901, advancing the science and understanding of measurements. Today, its scope has expanded to include advanced technologies such as nanoscale science, neutron research, information technology, and cyber security. Since 1990, NIST has been producing the 800-series of special publications to address the security and privacy needs of the United States government. The series includes guidelines, recommendations, and technical specifications generated out of NIST’s Information Technology lab. NIST also brings together the manufacturing industry, academics, and the government with the goal of advancing manufacturing in the United States by facilitating the adoption of new technologies and training the manufacturing workforce, coupled together this boosts competitiveness. It helps US organizations improve competitiveness and performance by identifying and sharing top management practices, principles, and strategies, such as cybersecurity risk management. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework is a voluntary schema of cybersecurity best practices risk assessment tools that organizations can use to shape their own cybersecurity activities.
