I learned my lesson a long time ago about leaving the toilet seat up. It wasn’t pretty.

How many years now? Give up!

In my mother’s death notice in the newspaper, she was the youngest amongst seven people.

My wife and I were always taught to put the toilet lid down when finished, but our guests almost always leave the lid up. Informal poll: lid up or down?

Her bath, down. Man-cave bath, whatever. If the issue here gets too heated, change the foregoing to Leave it down and aim through it.

When your housemate is incontinent, it’s in everybody’s best interest to leave the seat down and the lid up.

Geez – be glad he puts the seat up!

My mom’s more concerned about flushing.

Two females in this household ( not counting the dog) and we leave lids up. At our age we don’t have time to put the lid up when we have to “go.”

On a dark night, when the moon is high, you might fall in, and almost die, and who would be left to cry? !

I thought of writing a candid comment, but declined because I would not like to read all your comments.

Sometimes I wish Pickles were a little less “Lockhorns” and a little more “Love Is…”

Men need the seat up 9 times out of ten.

Women need the seat up 0 times.

Do the math:

If you are a man living alone, so it makes sense for you to leave it up.

If you are one man + one woman, it’s 9 times out of 20. So leave it down.

Obviously, additional people (and dogs) may influence the calculation.

Side note: if the practice goes against the math, it shows who’s wearing the trousers ;-)

I told my wife when she started in on this after we got married, “You need it down all the time. I need it up most of the time. You never put it up for me when you’re done, so why should I put it down when I’m done? Oh, and if you want to keep at this, I’ll never put it up and you can deal with the ‘fallout’.” Then we agreed we’d both close the lid completely before we flush, which is a lot more sanitary and solves the original problem.

Come on, Earl! Close the lid before flushing. (Unless you enjoy being in a cloud of dilute atomized urine.)

George Burns used to say that the first thing he did when he woke up was read the obituary page; if he didn’t see his name there, he then got out of bed.

If you grew up with cats, you put the seat and cover down.

I always looked before I sat, when I had others living with me. It saved me from having the annoying cold butt wash. Yeah, they had me trained.

The obituaries should have the cause of death in them, so if one sees a younger person, it isn’t as disconcerting. I’m with Earl, though, it’s getting to the point where most are younger than me. Sigh…

more important, always check for paper in public stalls

Earl did put a light on the toilet to let you know if the seat was up in the night time, but you didn’t like that he added “Moon River” to play, also.

Both down. However, those women then sit without looking, not smart. You have only yourself to blame if your butt gets wet.

I probably have the only female offspring who I could not train to put the lid down. Still doesn’t, in her own home. Since she has a toddler, I hope she never needs a plumber to find what the toddler decides to flush. I am all for all down for safety and healthy and aesthetics. But I prefer to have my own bathroom so I don’t have to deal with falling in, sitting in urine, cleaning it up off the floor, etc, and any number of issues in the middle of the night if I get up and keep my eyes closed so I can get back to sleep when I return to bed.

We put it where we need it to be and leave it there.

If it’s done right.. put the cover down as well… which leads to same problem. Look before you squat seems to be the best solution.

One of my wives ( I’m not sure which ) finally toilet trained me to put the seat and the lid back down after using … and of course, to remember to flush ( and spray after certain functions )!

Opal, remember that old saying, “Look before you leak.”

at least you know he didn’t pee on the seat!

Take it from me, at his age, less clean up when you sit … especially at 3 A.M.

For us, the solution is to have separate bathrooms. We may have other petty gripes, but not the toilet seat one.

Can’t say he hasn’t been warned. She just didn’t mention she was the author of the demise of those others.

If the lid is up and a female has to put it down and the next person in is male and has to put it up, isn’t that fair?

Men have smaller bladders than women and urinate more frequently. You are responsible to check any equipment before you use it.

After their many years of marriage, she should automatically check! Besides there is a difference between putting the seat back down…. And leaving the seat down!!!

There was a Beetle Bailey, in which Ms. Buxley says " You men are so inconsiderate! You always leave the seat up!"

The men then respond " Why do you always leave it down?"

My mother always insisted on the seat being down. I finally told her she was the only female in a house with five males, AND she had her own bathroom. So she was outvoted. She could leave the seat down in HER bathroom, but we’d leave the seat up in the other bathrooms, especially since we were the ones who cleaned our own bathrooms. Democracy at work.

Why is a woman unable to lower the seat?

…and the ultimate responsibility for the position of the toilet seat rests with whoever is about to use it…

My wife likes the lid down, to keep the cat from drinking out of the toilet.
