I would actually prefer that we don’t have public statues of people at all, because it’s too easy to get into a cult of personality, even after the fact. Even though I’m fond of the MLK statue. Better, imo, to have statues that are about an artistic concept (the thinking man, some of the 30s era stuff that’s the apotheosis of the working person, an arch over a river… or a tribute to Science)
A statue for Scientists? Okay, as long as that statue isn’t as vulgar as the one the trans-galactic robot messenger Salo carved for display on the moon Titan, titled “The Discovery Of Atomic Power.” See Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, “The Sirens Of Titan.” Chapter 12. (Modesty forbids me to describe it …)
When attitudes change or become rooted in anger and bigotry, then tributes to ideas, philosophies, discoveries become as quickly outmoded as those for individuals. On the other hand, as examples of the artistic talents that created them, they still have value.
Sadly, anti-science bullies have been trying to squash nerds for generations… they even use the nerds’ inventions against them, without perceiving any irony…

The GQP attacks scientists and teachers. Says a lot about their character.

The left will form an angry mob and tear down the statue because scientists wear white lab coats.

Cato the censor wittily remarked “After I’m dead, I would rather people asked why I have no monument, than ask why I have one”.

Typo on that statue base. It’s spelled N-U-R-S-E-S.
