I teach a unit on medical vocabulary. One of the terms we discuss is DRE (Digital Rectal Examination). I explain that (1) “digital” refers to a finger, not technology, and (2) it shows, with all our high-tech medical equipment, use of the old-fashioned sense of touch still has value.
As for this cartoon, I’ve never heard of a DOE (Digital Oral Examination), at least in our universe. Assuming this cartoon universe operates on the same principals, I’d advise this patient to hightail it to another doctor.
