It overlooks the destroyed equipment and the ones left that either don’t work anymore or that the Taliban have no idea how to operate. It also ducks the fact that we shouldn’t have been there that long in the first place nor that the withdrawal would have been this problematic under any president. Of course, now the military-industrial complex has more excuse to waste our taxes on Pentagon waste.
Never Forget. Donald Trump and Mike Pompeo surrendered to the Taliban and released 5000+ prisoners to them, including officials of their prior regime who collaborated with Osama bin Laden.
Gary Varvel, who has never BEEN inside a tank, fully lacks understanding of the sophisticated technological complexity of simply making it move, not to mention putting a round down range and hitting the target. It’s not like driving your Subaru, Gary. Which you pay someone else to change the oil for you.
Yes, Gary, the Taliban had nothing but swords until we came along. Right.
Republicans are running around claiming that we left “$83 billion” worth of equipment behind. In reality, $83 billion was what we spent on training and equipping the Afghan army over twenty years. Were we supposed to somehow take all that back before leaving?
(and if you think Trump would have handled it better, I invite you to look back at the pullout from northern Syria, where Russian media filmed themselves pawing through abandoned American bases.)
1) The Taliban was not left with any operational or salvageable equipment or armaments. The Pentagon spent the previous 6 weeks removing over $82 Billion worth of American equipment, weapons and ammo.
2) The Mango Meathead was the architect of the Zany, Marx-Brothers-Antics-like Withdrawal. He had forced the next president to follow it, no matter how bad it was. However, Biden did to the one and only thing he could do to save American lives — he slowed down the timetable as much as he could, and as a result there were absolutely no American casualties as a result of the withdrawal.
President Biden: “I love the Taliban so much that a lot of new members are former Afghan Army. They will teach those 7th century cavemen to drive those lovely tanks and fly those lovely Apache helicopters”.
A war without a mission waged by four U.S. Presidents. The losses under Joe are the lowest we have suffered. Now that we’re out Afghanistan is imploding appears Joe did the right thing.
Leave it to Varvel to pin the last 20 years of failure on the first 7 months of the person that acknowledged those failures, especially in light of the surrender agreement of the Previous Occupant who promised to remove all the troops if the Taliban didn’t attack them during the draw down and withdrawl.
All the heavy equipment, tanks, planes, big guns that use a chip to operate were made inoperable through our military satellite systems. All U.S. military weapons are protected that way, even that sold/given to allies. That’s why Israel flies French planes. That’s why we don’t see any tape of the Taliban using the stuff.
Because Varvel cherishes Stuff over American Lives. So Gary how many American should we have sacrificed to get our Broke Stuff back?
Go Ahead give me a Number> We all know that it wouldn’t have been zero. Some American would have died going into the countryside to recover old tanks and other items that we equipped the Afghan army with. Do you think the Afghan army would have returned those weapons without a fight?
That is what the Taliban would have loved to see. us getting into a fire fight with the locals as we tried to recover weapons
Yet the Taliban complains about the condition that those left-behind American tanks are in, and feel betrayed… if those tanks were in primo condition they wouldn’t be complaining…
How much weaponry was left behind by Russia? Uuummmm??? How much weaponry has Russia donated to the Afghanistan to fight the US? In the entire history of global warfare, has an invading army ever managed to remove their surplus armament when they leave?
Gary, do you honestly believe that Trump would have done better? It was his withdrawal plan that gave the Taliban months to prepare, and his inept and delusional “greatest negotiator” skills that set up a failed departure and the immediate Taliban takeover, not Biden. Trump was a total failure as a president, a divisive disaster as a world leader that we may never recover from, criminal in his denial of Covid that killed 500,000 people under his watch, a pathological liar, and a thief of taxpayer dollars. He also changed the American culture with conspiracy theories, he fomented distrust of all authority except his own, he “formulated” foreign policy on his uninformed, ignorant whims, he denied undeniable climate change helping to doom our kids to lives of deprivation, food and water shortages and impossible living conditions. The question, Gary…pay attention now…is what Trump or any RESPONSIBLE president SHOULD have been doing for all of us as citizens of the US and of the world. That’s the ball to keep your eye on. That’s what your cartoons should responsibly be about. Come on…get some fortitude and make a difference instead of cheap shot after cheap shot. Biden’s not perfect but he’s addressing and trying to improve many issues, many of which Trump has initiated or terribly exasperated. C’mon, Gary…man up…and let’s see how many folks agree with this…
What a wonderful legacy for Joe Talibiden’s “Presidency.” Thanks, Joe! And a thank you, too, to all of our domestic enemies who “voted” for that dummy.
