He’s unpopular with the folks who Ramirez IS popular with. But the current polls (and you know what THEY are worth) Newsom walking away with a clear win.
And that tells me that this mess is mostly inside Ramirez’s head, not out there in the real world.
Of course it doesn’t matter that the potential person who could become the next governor is a complete whack-a-doodle. He has an R next to his name, and that’s all that matters to the GQP.
Yes, the recall is, indeed, a Republican power grab, just another attempt to overturn an election THEY LOST against a popular, successful governor who was elected overwhelmingly, with 62% of the vote.
For goddess’ sake, the Republican election-stealers began circulating the recall petitions the first day they were eligible to do so, because they know that THEY CANNOT WIN A STATEWIDE RACE IN A HIGH-TURNOUT GENERAL ELECTION in California in which the winner must get an outright majority (more than 50%), not merely a plurality (the most votes in a field) in a low-turnout special election in which their base is energized by their only chance to win statewide office.
It has NOTHING to do with the pandemic — they filed and began circulating petitions long before the pandemic hit. And Newsom has been the most aggressive in taking wildly popular steps to actually end the pandemic, and blue areas of the state are doing well while pockets of outbreaks are occurring in the red areas (Central Valley; far North; Inland Empire area) that oppose the efforts to actually stop the spread.
California has a ridiculously low threshold of signatures to qualify a recall (half that of most states). And even then, the Republican recall effort failed to get the necessary number of signatures, so a judge arbitrarily ruled they could have an extra four months because of the pandemic, something not provided for in the recall law and, in a strategic mistake, Newsom did not appeal.
We need to revise the recall law to double the number of required signatures to qualify as in other states and only have a yes/no up-or-down vote on the recall itself and then, if a governor is removed from office, have the vacancy filled by the LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR as in other states, which would also be someone who was elected with an outright majority in a high-turnout general election.
“As Arnold Schwarzenegger steps down this month, California voters can only marvel that a leader of such apparent strength is leaving the Golden State such a weakling—its institutions eroded and its finances more of a mess than when he took over from Gray Davis after the 2003 recall. Even among Schwarzenegger’s earliest detractors, few would have dared to predict that by his last summer in office, the governor who had entered the statehouse a movie star would bottom out with a 22 percent public approval rating, tying Davis for the lowest recorded approval rating in California history.”
Here, the leading GQP contender makes The Governator look like a political genius.
A great depiction of the “infrastructure” problems of California. A real shame your idol Pelosi isn’t going to get her trillion to play with. Term limits.
It is morally wrong to take money from people who have spent their entire life preparing themselves, educating themselves, working hard to be a success and then spreading said money amongst people who have done the exact opposite. They fail in school, they have zero ambition and take responsibility for nothing. But that’s the Democrat way. How has it worked in Cuba, Venezuela, the USSR? One more question: Who will pay for all of this blue cities bailout. Well, of course, the hard working responsible people mentioned above in my first sentence.
No Water and Fires among the listed reasons that Gavin’s gotta go? Those who believe the sitting Gov is responsible for Mike’s laundry list have not delved into the issues.
^^ Wow, has this troll got the RWNJ talking points going, conveniently forgetting the mega$$$ the RW has dumped into this to start the recall and whip up the MAGAts.
Most of California’s problems have nothing to do with who is governor. The cost of living here is high now and was high when Republicans ran the state. The fires are a new thing, but that’s climate change and not just a problem in California. It also wouldn’t matter if the governor had an R or a D after their name.
The thing is that most Californians prefer a more progressive direction for it’s government. The only way that this recall was going to succeed was if it was snuck in while people were not paying attention. That’s not working. If the polls are true, it would appear that Gov. Newsome will beat back this challenge by the same margin he was elected with.
California is so blue that another Democrat will be sure to replace Newsom if he recalled. No Republican has won a statewide office in Cali in decades.
Newscum is neither very popular nor very successful, but he is very democrat. Of those three things, the last is the only one that matters in CA. He will prevail.
I totally disagree with you on all your “points”. If Newson stays, you will get your wish on changing the recall threshold. You clearly are an example of the progressive left in this state. Not a single issue illustrated in the comic is untrue.
Great art work (as always), nitwit content (ditto). I believe that by all economic measures, Texas and California are more or less neck-and neck, despite the confident predictions of “conservatives” that California’s “woes” (as symbolized in M Ramirez’s drawing) would lead to the rapid ruination of the state, and Texas’s economic development would be the stupor mundi. (Like Kansas’s.)
Now it remains to be seen if “high tech” companies follow through on their second-thoughts about pitching their silken pavilions in a primitive backwater like Texas.
To all the wagging tongues above, we shall see when the election is over. The Californians will have spoken and they are the ones that will have to deal with their votes.
In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, I was proud to lead an amazing, resilient, united people. When it comes to the unity of America, those days seem distant from our own. A malign force seems at work in our common life that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. That leaves us worried about our nation and our future together." GW Bush
Many California residents are deeply dissatisfied about a broad range of issues. Some can legitimately be blamed on Newsom, some on the Governor’s past and present, and some on the long term Dem control of the State.
The simple reality is that this recall is 1st and foremost a grass roots effort. The GOP is most certainly backing it but the inertia that produced enough signatures to proceed is absolutely local.
You must also consider the make up of the petition signers. In LA County more that 52% of those who signed the petition are Dems. 17% GOP and the rest Independent or third party. Hardly a GOP coup attempt.
The primary reason for the recall is Newsom’s gross mismanagement of the Covid restrictions. But there are a many other problems driving the recall effort, some that probably should not be factored. California residents will not see major changes even if they do put Elder in the Governor’s seat. With a legislative super-majority the Dems will render him essentially powerless, just as they did with Ahnold.
Denying facts and the truth again, I see, Russian Ramirez.
I hope those Blood-Soaked Rubles you’re paid in for your hate-propaganda feel good in your hands now, because one day, you will face judgment, and nothing of this world except your words and actions will exist or matter at that point.
Hard to believe that anybody with eyes open would still want the Democrats in control; They have absolutely ravaged several states – including mine. But, it’s probably just a coincidence or “Trump’s fault” that the 3 states for the most citizen exodus are CA, IL, and NJ.

Tell me, Ramirez, would this recall happen at all if California law said that in the event of a recall, the Lt. Governor would take over?
