It’s about time that war was over.

It sure was shocking and horrible to see the treasonous flag in the nation’s capitol building.

    Never again.

    (I hope)

What is the definition of ‘win the war’? Seriously. Are you the winner if you take loot from the adversary? What about if you send them money to rebuild? (I’m thinking WW II here). Are you the winner if a majority of history books in the grade just before university or job mention your nation as the winner? Does it have to be a BIG majority? Does it matter if you don’t count the books in the adversary’s schools? Is it just a mutual congratulation society of diplomats? How long before your “win” doesn’t count any more… or is it good forever?

I agree that far too much of the Confederate States’ behaviors made its way into our own behavior… but we seem to be getting better. Some. Some places. And in fact Texas etc, IMO, would not be so adamant about their behavior if they weren’t running very scared.

Just as in Vietnam, the US did not go in to “win a war”. The US (supposedly) went in to help local, friendly forces get strong enough to win it on their own. Unfortunately, the ones who were supposed to plan things did not know what they were doing.

The original conspiracy theory is the ‘Lost Cause’ mythology that sprang up in the wake of the Civil War. The Union forces under Lincoln in Washington DC, became the ‘Deep State’ of today. The Confederate political movement became the Evangelical party that masquerades as a religion. The Civil War became the ‘Culture War.’ States Rights became the casus belli for the war, and not maintaining slavery. Worst of all, the traitors who took up arms against their country starting with the Ft. Sumter attack, are no longer traitors, but ‘patriots’.

To be fair, he did know when to quit. Had he not gone with Virginia, the Civil War would’ve been much shorter.

Today’s trivia… The Arlington National Cemetery was established during the Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, previously the estate of Mary Anna Custis Lee, a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington and wife of Robert E. Lee.

To be fair to Robert Lee, he acknowledged defeat and lived with it as well as he could. He did not deny, he did not encourage resistance, he did not harangue his considerable following.

Figures Little Donnie would idolize R.E. Lee. Next it’ll be Nathan Bedford Forrest or John C. Calhoun (assuming he even knows who they were). He makes any intelligent person want to puke.

Those were words spoken by Trumpie. I doubt Robert E. Lee spoke them, he was the one signing the surrender treaty at Appomatox. Oh yeah, and Robert E. Lee wasn’t a slaveholder … /s

The Confederacy quit the U.S., attacked the U.S., made war on the U.S., invaded the U.S. and killed U.S. soldiers. Confederate statues, monuments, namesakes and memorabilia belong in a museum, as Jefferson Davis’ great, great-great grandson said, along with Hirohito, Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin. All defeated enemies of the U.S.

The correct response, the history making retort by Clark Cable as Rhett Butler, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”As per the movie Gone with the Gin." The South lives upon its aggreivemint as a junkie upon his dope.

Another bit of trivia. General Lee was against monuments of the Confederacy ever being erected. He was largely a horrible human being when it came to human rights, but he held a certain amount of honor and shame for committing treason against the USA of which he had been commissioned to protect. Hence, the no monuments should ever be erected honoring the Confederacy.

They may have been able to claim victory up until recently. For a hundred forty odd years southern states controlled the narrative, writing most of the history books we studied, but the facts are finally coming to light with the truth now being told to all.

In a way, the South did win the US Civil War. After Germany lost WWII, they began a period of introspection and denunciation of everything the Nazis stood for. After the US Civil War, the North kowtowed to the South, allowing them to keep their customs and their folklore which ended up elevating their traitorous actions to the mythology of the “Lost Cause” – for which we’re still paying a price today. If we had only put the South on trial in 1865, stripped anyone who profited from slavery or sedition of power and money and made it very clear that they lost the war, we wouldn’t have people glorifying those losers today. Who’d want to fly the flag of losers and identify with their ideals?

For about 100 years after the civil war the South remade it to be a virtuous war for State rights. The “Lost Cause”, and all of it’s generals were virtuous gentlemen. However, the nitty gritty reality was it was only about perpetuating the horrid institution of slavery.
