Back in my working days, our smarty-pants team leader would change your laptop orientation to upside-down if you left it up when briefly leaving your workstation. We wasted more time trying to fix that than was worth the lesson on protecting client confidentiality.
Back in the late 1800s, The Peterkin Papers was a collection of short stories about a family absolutely lacking in common sense. The second tale featured the purchase of a piano … which the delivery men put in the living room with the keyboard up against the wall. Fortunately, there was a window onto the porch, so anyone wanting to play the piano could sit out on the porch, reaching in through the window. A bit troublesome in cold weather, though. They finally mentioned the difficulty to the wise old “lady from Philadelphia,” who suggested they turn the piano around.
“‘Why did we not think of that before?’ said Mrs. Peterkin. ‘What shall we do when the lady from Philadelphia goes home again?’”
In fairness to the Peterkins, the very first story showed that pretty much everybody else in their small town was equally ditzy.
When we bought our first “smart” TV we were in the middle of a remodel, so we asked the construction guys to mount it using the mount the store sold me. They did and it worked great. Then when we bought a newer, bigger TV, we discovered that the mount sold by the store didn’t fit the TV they sold me. One support bar covered the power plug. The workmen had solved it by using a power saw to carve down the metal support bar to make room for the plug and had never told me about it. They charged me almost nothing to install it, too, less than half what the store had quoted me for the installation. Sometimes it takes skill and the right tools. The idiot at the store had assured me that the mount fit that TV, of course.
