How do you get four bits into CAN50¢?

Today’s dialogue in Panel 3 was by written guest writer Charles Dickens, who wants everyone to know “four bits = 50 cents” for those who remember how it was in the UK over a century ago.

I do not remember how it was in the UK. But when I was young it Two bits to go to a movie.

Liz, if these are for a bake sale, you should have covered them and hidden them rather than leaving them on the family dining table which is an open invitation.

Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar, all for (insert high school name here) stand up and holler! —cheer is at LEAST 50 years old

Liz, just be grateful that your brother isn’t Jughead Jones or Jeremy Duncan, cause then there would be NO cookies for the bake sale!!

I’m with Michael here, it’s awful not to give your ppl a cookie each when you’ve got the heavenly baking aroma in the house!

What’s a date square and 4 bits?

It’s sad that their relationship doesn’t improve until both siblings are out of the house. Also it’s just a date square. At least he didn’t eat the whole pan.

Even though the year 1992 was still early in Canada for the internet, Lynn Johnston must have been prophetic. Here she says 4 bits pays for Michael’s bite, but it really turns out that 8 bits equals a byte.

Date Square. Umm Sounds good. Now I want one.

School bake sale. Both these kids are old enough to bake for the sale themselves, and learn to contribute. Why didn’t they?

Canadians still say “four bits” instead of $0.50 We also call a dollar a “buck”. We did not dump everything British after we became self governed…unlike another country I know. lol

Date squares are a big thing in Canada (my favourite thing!). Are they known in the States?

I haven’t heard the term “bits” since the 80s when my grandma passed away

I still wonder if Lynn spied on my family when my siblings & I were younger! This is exactly the way my younger brother & sister would be!!

Sometimes I wondered the reason why Martha broke up with Michael. After seeing the second panel, now I understand. I also see why he is having trouble getting another girlfriend.
