“This is the part where you run away!” says Elvis with a Scottish accent.

The bluejays ignore him and continue shouting at each other.

My two enjoy charging at the glass and making all the birds fly away in a startle.

    The squirrels don’t even move.

One time I was working out in the yard and this bird was there hunting for worms or whatever. Then this bigger bird swooped down and pounced on it. I thought, “Hmm, they’re really going at it! Oh wait. They’re not fighting. They’re not fighting at all! Sorry, I’ll give you two some privacy.”

Birds round here seem to quarreling most of the time, except for the lorikeets. (Small parrots.) They just chatter cheerfully, which is what you expect from parrots. They always seem to be in a good mood. Haven’t been around for a while, though. The last time I saw parrots, their hearts were young and gay, and every time I think of them, I remember them that way.

The main battles in my yard are between the blue jays and the mockingbirds. The mockingbirds usually win out even though they’re smaller.

I haven’t been able to put any seeds in my feeders this summer because there is some sort of mystery bird disease killing off song birds. The wildlife officials are advising people not to fill feeders. I know the birds have plenty of natural food available, but I like to put small amounts of seeds in the feeders from time to time so the parents can teach their fledglings where the feeders are and how to land on them.

Poor Elvis. It’s awful when you are ignored as a fearsome predator. I bet Tommy speaks Blue Jay, and perhaps he can help out.

I guess it’s a good thing that the station Tweets now.

I haven’t noticed the birds around here fighting or arguing much with each other, although sometimes with the sparrows it’s hard to tell fighting from any other kind of interaction.

There is a bird around here, or several of them, that keep saying “Hey Jimmy” over and over. I swear that’s what it is. Don’t know who Jimmy is, or why they’re trying to get his attention.

Fittingly this morning when I opened my slider the blue jays were being quite vocal. I couldn’t see any, they were probably back in my pine trees. Maybe they were telling me that they wanted me to put some more peanuts out for them.

A whole gang of blue jays is currently screaming outside my window. I’ll wait a bit longer to put out food in the hopes that they lose interest and the little songbirds can snap some of it up before they return!

The big fight in my yard this spring was bluebirds and downy woodpeckers trying to claim a hole in one of my trees. Bluebirds won. Unfortunately, the mean little suckers also chased away the catbird I was well on the way to getting tame enough to eat from my hand. He and his relatives won’t even come close to the house now. But I did see a pileated woodpecker flying around the other evening and heard him calling from the trees, a rare treat.

The guy(?) on the left should have just said “You’re in my bath”. We call it a birdbath but wouldn’t they just call it “bath” ?  I never tell someone I am going to the “people bath” to wash up. :-)

We put in/up a catio the first month after we moved up here. The blue jays found a way to get in and bother our cats on the very first day. On the second day the blue jays that survived stayed quietly away. Some jays have unsuccessfully tried to bother the cats since but have met the same fate as the first stupid ones. The cats love the little blue toys/snacks. Don’t bother the Siameses or the Norwegian Forest Cat. Odinsdottir likes her peace and quiet.

I don’t have blue jays here in northwestern Washington, but I do have a flock of Stellar’s Jays. They have black heads and blue bodies. Their crests are so individual. Some are like permanent mowhawks, some lie flat and are raised for expressiveness, Some are in two tufts. I feed them peanuts in the shell. They peck a hole and then their long black prehensile tongues pull the nut out. They are such fun to watch.

Consider yourself lucky if you are able to see bluejays if you live in bluejay territory.

West Nile Virus wiped out the bluejays and cardinals in my area about 15 years ago. Only the cardinals have made a recent comeback.

The bluejays are still nowhere to be found.

I’m going to geek out for a moment here – I saw a new bird today! A hooded warbler was hopping around in the branches of an oak tree. Such a lovely, bright shade of yellow offset by a jaunty black cap and chinstrap! Check out Cornell’s bird site or Wikipedia to see – such a wonderful sight on a gray, gloomy day.
