The Taliban was there before we invaded, and it seems that 20 years, billions of dollars, and training 300,000 Afghan soldiers didn’t make much difference. Can’t free a country that doesn’t want to be freed.
There was never going to be a clean exit. I just wish there was more we could have done for those who don’t want their girls raped and married as children. Sadly, with the Taliban in charge the women and girls will suffer the most.
Anybody ever watch “Charlie Wilson’s War” (Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts)?
It’s not a documentary, but hews fairly close to the truth.
When Reagan armed the Taliban in order to stick it to the Soviets, he didn’t bother to plan for the aftermath, figuring that they’d follow his script, not their own.
So what’s the role of Pakistan here? (Search #SanctionPaskistan hashtag on twitter for context.) If they are actively or tacitly providing support in this carnage, then they need to be taken to task as well.
In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh was no saint but we discovered the hard way that propping up a corrupt clique of gangsters such as Thieu, Ky, and Diem was not the answer. Once the US pulled out, the corrupt South Vietnamese government collapsed.
Baby Bush didn’t learn the lesson, so he propped up an inept bunch with no significant following as the ruling clique of Afghanistan. Now that government is collapsing.
Can’t change a culture with bullets. The only way this “might” have worked would have been to move many many American families to that forsaken land. Sort of what the USSR did to Estonia and its neighbouring countries. Mind it didn’t work there but only because they didn’t stay long enough… takes 1~200 years probably.
The only ways the US could have any chance of prevailing were to go in and be prepared to stay for generations or go in with overwhelming force and root the Taliban out, town by town, pass by pass, cave by cave, like we did in the Pacific islands in WWII, until they were all gone.
I’m not proud of what’s happening in Afghanistan, but it was entirely predictable. I do not see how what’s happening now would be any different if Trump, who scheduled the withdrawal, were still in office (please, God, NO!), with the possible exception that 100% of the Afghanis who helped us would be left behind to be murdered.
No problem, MB. Even though the earliest predicted date for the second coming of the stable genius has passed with no restoration to power, we have been blessed with several more prophesied dates and it is certain that Biden will soon be set aside and the infinite wisdom and justice to which we became accustomed during the four years between Obama and Biden will once again be dispensed from the oval office. The peace and prosperity which the former guy had provided to the Afghans will be restored; Arabs and Jews again will be joined in brotherly love and Pluto will be restored to its proper status as the ninth planet. The injustice of the massive election fraud will be ended!!!!!!!
After our own failures in Vietnam and Iraq and the Soviet’s failure in Afghanistan, you would think we learn from the errors of history. But no, we keep doing the same thing over and over again. What’s that they say about insanity?

Sorry, Steve, but the Taliban is Afghanistan. They want us out. After 20 years, and a trillion dollars, we are leaving.

Just like Korea and Vietnam, the enemy had countries that hated us sending unlimited weapons and ammunition.

We should have never been there but we sure couldn’t hold Saudi Arabia responsible for 9/11; not with all their oil and buying of military equipment.

The Taliban and rich people are vampires. They have no value and suck the life out of everyone they touch.
