Absolutely. Mental health isn’t stressed enough. I think schools need to do a better job. While we do learn about mental health, that doesn’t mean every teacher will place it above getting homework done nor that every student has the confident to talk about their concerns.

Suffering from Mental health problems is NOT a weakness. It is mostly shaped from the environment the person has been put through. And let’s see how many conservatives calling out Simone Biles for “betrayal” or “being too weak” have been through as much training, effort, stress, pressure and more and competed in the Olympics and won some shiny medals :)

Simone Biles has shown the faith she has in her teammates to fill in for her. That is strength. Thinking you are the only important person on the team shows weakness of character.

Athletes are the most self aware people on the planet. Physically and mentally. She took inventory and made a decision for herself. It’s nice to have that individual FREEDOM.

Mental health issues can also be genetic.

I think it unfortunate that the media is labeling “doubt" in one’s ability as a mental problem.

You can take pills for the heart and tummy, but there are none to cure the mind. Kudos to Simone for having the courage to recognize the need for change. She’s still a champion.

Why are we so obsessed with ranking everyone? I talk to my students about this every year, because they worry so much about grades. I dislike grades, and I give grades only because I would be fired if I didn’t. Evaluation is fine, but that’s different from grading. Evaluation might say, “This part of your essay was very interesting; I think there’s another issue you need to consider. Your grammar is better this time, but keep watching out for sentence fragments.” This kind of evaluation notices improvements and problems, but it does not rank the student’s work by comparing it to the work of the other students. I want the students to do their best, and to get better, no matter where they are in some ranking system. How many times will a student in our system get a grade? Hundreds of times, hundreds. It’s just not necessary to grade people all the time.

It’s not even just a mental health issue.. but one of self-care. Why shame or condemn someone who is making the smart decision to not do something that could potentially cause a life-altering injury?!? No gymnast, athlete, or any other human being owes a explanation to anyone else. They 100% don’t owe anything to the couch potatoes out there who know nothing of the hard work and sacrifices these athletes put themselves through. Rock on, Simone! <3

Easy question for Simone Biles’ critics—would you fly with a pilot who suffered from spatial disorientation?

It is about time that the public stop treating athletes, movie stars, television stars, etc., like gods and start realizing that they are human. It is time to realize that they have loves, hurts, fears and, yes, even mental health issues. Come on people, they are not gods. They are not perfect, just human.

I call B.S. The reason that Simone had to step down is because the Olympic FIG (International Olympic Federation) determined that her moves were too dangerous for other gymnasts to compete.

    https://aninjusticemag.com/simone-biles-is-being-penalized-for-being-exceptional-aa366cd929c8

Simone put the Yerchenko double pike move (see Natalia Yurchenko 1983 World Championships) combined with Biles’ own signature moves into her routine. FIG determined that even though those move’s difficulty were far beyond any they’ve ever seen, those moves would not garner a higher difficulty score for Simone.

FIG effectively told Ms. Beautiful & Talented Biles that she will not get winning points for doing gymnastics that are more difficult and more technical than ANY THAT HAVE BEEN DONE BEFORE. FIG used their power to hogtie Simone into being less spectacular.

I think that is why Ms. Simone Biles had to take some mental health time. She is being cheated out of creating WORLD GYMNASTIC RECORDS because of her greatness.

    What a bunch of CRAP!!!
