And then we can start having a political draft so we can force the current Congress into retirement.

Of course, that would mean going back to teaching civics in schools again.

Interestingly, Hannity, Carlton, Cruz, Trump, his sons, and a number of other right wing idiots have all avoided any military service, and they’re the ones squawking the loudest about what is wrong with out Armed Forces. They’re also the ones calling our senior officers “pansies”.

Some Senators are considering a bill that would require young women to register for the draft. Which young men still must do. Yeah, that does allow you to infer that someday women might be drafted. But note that NOBODY has been drafted into the military since January of 1973. That was (mumble, carry the 17…) 48 YEARS ago last January.

Wasn’t that the theoretical reason the ERA hasn’t passed yet?

If congress votes for war, the first ones drafted, should be their offspring.

What’s so hard about that, Al? Women can serve in almost every category in the military and we all know they’ve fought in combat.

Gee, somehow I don’t see the potential military fitness level all that much better for young women who likely engage in the same inactivities as young men.

I have no problem with that, as a woman that served. I have a problem forcing women to serve in the military when they won’t allow them to make their own choices when it comes to abortion and birth control.

Can’t they just claim they have bone spurs? Now, in Israel, every able bodied person over the age of 18 must serve in the military regardless of gender.

Since we do not have a draft the issue is registering with Selective Service which has been going on for 45 years and no one has been drafted. As for the fair sex fighting I doubt we will have a WWII style war with soldiers storming a beach and then walking across France. We will not have a Normandy style landing on the coast of China or tank battles in Europe. More likely it will be either total nuclear war or surgical drone/missile strikes operated by a soldier in North Carolina.

I support the right for all Americans to fight for our country. Gender discrimination is archaic and should be abolished. I would be proud to fight along side any one who loves our country.

The military does not want a draft; they prefer an army of soldiers who want to:

The main reason the Generals do not want a draft is if draftees are the ones being sent to a war then the public will demand a quick end to the war. During Vietnam War just about every family knew of someone who could be drafted and sent to Vietnam and this led to the growing opposition. Today few people have a family member in the service and thus have less concern about professional soldiers, to quote trump,“he knew what he was getting into” when calling a mother of a KIA soldier.

I remember speaking to my mother during the early part of the Vietnam conflict, and she told me that at the beginning of World War II and the lead up her generation was carrying on about how the young people of that they were no good and could not do as well as that their generation did in the first world war. It seems to be a habit of older people putting down the young.

I joined the Navy out of high school – we had a military obligation then. They taught me a trade (computers). When I got out I went to college (at night) on the GI Bill while working full time as a computer tech (and making more money than the starting degreed engineers in my company).

We now have a lot of young folks who can’t get a decent job. And can’t find an apprentice opportunity that could/would turn into a decent job.

It’s bloody expensive to have a large standing military . . . how expensive are widespread unemployable folks?

Don’t know what the big deal is?! I’ve been saying for years, the draft needed to be changed to include women, especially when women started to be allowed in combat roles in the late 1970’s.
