Well, in the first place, I can find no evidence that the statues commemorate vehicles at all much less fossil fuel powered ones. Not saying it’s not so, but it’s certainly hidden behind the news about the renaming if so.
The second place is Bok’s silly idea that “the demoncrat libruls”† would actually do something like that.
The cartoonist’s attitude is a reflection of his misunderstanding of a lot of things (a polite way of saying stupid). That said I looked at the Wikipedia entry for the Hope Memorial Bridge and went on to look at photos of the Guardians. They are wonderful examples of the architecture of the time, and it is amazing that they have been retained until now (from Wikipedia there was one effort to get rid of them). The bridge was thought of first in the early 1920s but not finished until 1932 – i.e. three years into The Depression which began in 1929. No mention of how far the work had gone by 1929 – were the Guardians physically created or installed by then? – but to have continued with the project for three years into The Depression was also a feat (there’s probably a big story of how the budget was retained … allowing that alongside this project there were probably other things that did not get done but were needed). At the time the bridge was conceived and built the means of transportation and the things transported (gravel in the one truck?) did indicate and pay tribute to the technology/work that developed Cleveland (and lots of cities). I say all this as a Canadian who has just learned this wee bit about American history. Sometime in the next few days I’m going to take a look at two same period buildings in London, Ontario where I live and admire the carvings on them. I’ve never paid much attention to them before, but realize they deserve a look. Best regards, Maureen
The Cleveland Major League Baseball team was call Indians in 1915. It only took the crazy liberals and Native Americans 106 years to feel offended by the name. What ashame! The name was actually a tribute to Native Americans. How easily fools can swaystanding institutions?
It’s funny to come on here and see the same people everyday hating on Bok why read it if you hate it? I will never understand the hate from the democrats.
And the team is being sued by The Cleveland Guardians roller derby team for infringement. You’d think they would have at least conducted a Google search on that name.
I don’t understand why “Indians” is considered derogatory.. Were they not a proud people? Were all those old Western movies wrong?.. Was “Tonto” of the Lone Ranger movies/comic books not an honorable man? Have I been lied to all these years…..
Over the years, many sports teams have changed their names for many reasons. They are privately-owned businesses, and it is their right to do so. Cleveland ownership has been contemplating a change for a number of years, and they have decided now to do it.
No doubt business considerations played a large part in it: Would they gain or lose monetarily, in both the short-term and the long-term, by making such a change? That being said, what difference should it make to anybody WHY they made the change, unless they (the naysayers) LIKE the idea of keeping a name that may cause offense?
I hate the color red. If I bought the Cincinnati Reds, I might decide to change the name to the Blues. Not for political reasons, I just don’t like red. Sure, in the short term I would be alienating people who like red and hate blue, but in a generation only a handful of people would care at all.

I think they should name them “chickens”, in honor of Bok Bok Bok Bok.

Guardians is a wimpy name. Cleveland Tribe would have been good.

Huh?? This is over the top stupid even for Bok. I think it’s time for him to retire and write fictional memoirs.

In other parts of the world, it’s the extreme right-wing Taliban and ISIS that are the ones destroying works of art. Just saying.

Guardians is the name of a Cleveland male roller derby team. They, unfortunately, didn’t register the name.

I think the name fits the roller derby team better.
