We didn’t pay for billionaires’ ego trips? With the tax money they didn’t pay? Heck, Bezos thanked his customers and his employees for leaving him “enough” fortune to boost himself into mere minutes in space.
Neither! Bezos received funding and contracts from the US Government for his space flight. We totally paid for a lion’s share of the space trip through public money.
The American tax payer is already overburdened without the frivolous excess of paying for the Olympics. Bezos is teamed up with Boing and The United Launch Alliance through which he received R&D funding from the government. Elon Musk, on the other hand, funded his Space-X launch systems by himself. He contracted with the government for various space launch services at a far less cost than ULA which was the government’s prime launch contractor. Question is, why did the cheaper and reusable Space-X get only 40% vice ULA 60% of the launch contracts during the last round of negotiations with the government.
