After World War II the Germans did simply lie down and quit. There were attacks and conflicts well into the 1950’s. We had an entire special unit called the Constabulary Force. It was their duty to preserve and maintain peace in occupied Germany. The same thing happened in Japan. We went in with intention to stay permanently.
We did not do this after we toppled Afghanistan or Iraq. And we failed.
We’re not the first nation that failed when trying to tame the people of Afganistan. Still, I don’t fault President Bush for going in there. It had to be done.
The only learning necessary is to remember General Matthew Ridgeway who preached “do not get involved in a land war in Asia.” Fairly simple, fairly direct, and you don’t get anymore land war in Asia than Afghanistan.

Many politicians refuse to learn anything which does not support their own biases.

Stantis, how long do you think we should have stayed in Viet Nam?
Until we “won”?
If we “won” how would we know? And what exactly would be our reward?

Once again…no winner but a lot of losers of their life.

I was a little (a lot) disappointed when I heard how the military snuck out of Bagram Air Base in the dark and left it to looters.

The correct lesson is, don’t go there.

Scott, how many more decades should we stay and are you going to volunteer to serve there if we did? You didn’t the first 20 years.
