Buy antiques and used items. Helps the planet. And we really, really don’t need most of that new cheap crap. Every time you buy something think about how you will eventually need to get rid of it, and how.
I’m still waiting for the water to make it to the end of the hose.
We have the same problem at work. I work in manufacturing. Some of our parts are literally on a slow boat from China. We are trying to cut our ties with out Chinese suppliers. The cheaper cost isn’t worth the lead time.
While I understand one aspect of NAFTA, I don’ t understand the lack of quality control on the products that have inundated the market in the decades since.
Ordered 3 pairs of pants from a once great and reliable US company. Each pair was faulty. Legs not the requested length and not the same length, waist sizes varied by 2 inches,
Once shopped for well-known walking shoe brand at a national sporting goods chain. Asked for M width. Salesman brought out a half dozen pair and said they no longer designated widths. I walked out in shock.
Seems to me, if a company licenses foreign firms to produce their products, the first requirement would be to insure that specifications were precisely met and that the quality would meet or exceed their traditional output.
OK OK I know that is impossible, given the political and social entanglements that are part of the process. But when one remembers being able to buy a dress shirt with specific measurements instead of a size bracket, or a brand of shoes where the size rarely varied, or clothing that did not ravel at the seams after a few washings, one can express a few regrets about where progress has landed us, decades later.
Been using S.O.P. for decades at buying a new car. Right now, my wife’s been waiting a week or so for confirmation in print from ANYONE – from the dealership to the manufacturer – to confirm her deposit, her order, for a new car. SUCKS!
