There are about 25 different broods of cicadas that come out in different years in different parts of the Eastern United States. Some every 17 years, some every 13 years.
It is amazing that an insect that is the size of your thumb can make a noise as loud as a leaf blower and there are millions of them.
I suppose everything is pretty much a new experience when you only live a few days. Looks like all the ’cada ladies paired off already. Better luck next …oh yeah
Notice the bartender is green… Now it is time for the annual cicadas, which are the boring green ones. Unfortunately, here in southeastern VA, that’s all we get! None of the colorful scarlet ones.

Experienced the emergence of Brood X four times now, not counting 1953 when I was young and lived in the city. May never see another.

And I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can’t say much has happened since
But closing time, closing time, closing time

Where I live the 17 year cicadas will be visiting in 2024. What’s interesting that year, there will also 13 year cicadas downstate.

This is the first cicada year in my lifetime (longer than I’d like to admit) that I haven’t seen a single cicada.
