Once upon a time, many middle school science teachers offered extra credit for student submitted science projects. An insect collection, properly mounted and labeled, was often the project of choice. Instead of the classic presentation of specimens pinned in a collection box, some kids put the collected critters in transparent gelatin capsules glued to a backing board.
One story made national news and even led to a mom’s appearance on I’ve Got a Secret. Her middle-schooler’s encapsulated collection was… eaten by his toddler brother.
The mom said that when she found little brother happily munching on the capsules he grinned at her and said, “Bugs-bugs-bugs! BUGS GOOD!”
I love these single panel strips where the story self-reveals as your eye moves left to right… natural reading order in English. And these five kids! Every one a character and every one in character, every time.
I used to wonder how people came to know that some things in the wild are good to eat and others will do you harm. Then I figured it out. The turned loose a bunch of toddlers and since they will eat anything they can pick up, they just watched.
A Goliath Beetle found its way into the house yesterday morning; it could have been Sterling’s main course (but the cats weren’t quite sure what to do with it)!
When my niece was a toddler she could tell you which bugs were crunchy, which were juicy, etc. She ate other things too. Some trips to ER for the pump. We would find tiny teeth marks in bars of soap she could reach…..
I love the vast array of containers! Clearly this took effort and planning. This was in the works for some time. And then, oh! The humanity! The horror!
I wonder how they managed to get air holes in some of those bottles? The big one with the stopper on top would be hard to put air holes in without a glass cutter.

What is really friggin’ disturbing is that next to this comic the ad bar is flashy different insect habitats with the word CHEWY at the bottom.

Bricks and boards, the universal building materials. Either they are enormous bricks or really short kids. It’s all good.

I used to keep bugs in jars like that, but I stopped when a snail I caught died. I still like to observe insects when I’m outside though.

Don’t distract him if he wants to eat the fire-flies. Then you can take him on a snipe hunt!
