Republicans blame FBI for Capitol riot in new conspiracy

GOP lawmakers find latest scapegoat for evading insurrection probe

First, it was members of “antifa” or Black Lives Matter demonstrators who infiltrated the pro-Trump mob that breached the Capitol. Now Republican lawmakers have suggested that federal law enforcement, with support from Democratic officials, intentionally provoked an attempted insurrection on 6 January, injuring dozens of law enforcement officers and threatening elected officials.

During committee hearings probing the events leading up to and surrounding the attack, Republican officials have repeatedly deflected from the “stolen election” narrative they actively supported for months, culminating in the violence in the halls of Congress in a failed attempt to overturn the votes of millions of people.

On 15 June, during a House Oversight Committee hearing with FBI Director Christopher Wray and two Army officials, Louisiana US Rep Clay Higgins suggested Democrats conspired to disarm law enforcement and service members defending the Capitol. Arizona US Rep Paul Gosar also accused the US Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt of “lying in wait” to “execute” her.

That night, on Fox News, host Tucker Carlson called for “rounding up the FBI operatives that rioted” on 6 January, and suggested that “unindicted co-conspirators” who have yet to be charged might – in “every single case” – be FBI informants.

The theory has been promoted by Darren Beattie, a former Trump speechwriter who was dismissed from the White House in 2018 after it was discovered he appeared at a conference with white nationalists. Mr Trump later appointed him to serve on a commission tasked with preserving sites related to the Holocaust.

Eric Swalwell reveals shocking thing Republican did after refusing to shake DC cop’s hand

“To honor Donald Trump, you now have to dishonor the police, that’s the only explanation I have for you,” said Swalwell. “Officer Fanone and Officer Harry Dunn stopped by my office earlier today unannounced. They popped in, I chatted with them for a while. They told me how much it hurt to watch the vote yesterday where 21 Republicans voted against giving these hero officers the gold medals. They said they wanted to embark on going to those offices to meet the members of Congress, tell them about their experience and hopefully change their minds.”

“So Fanone called me about 20 minutes after he left my office and he was enraged,” continued Swalwell. “He said, is this really how it works around here? … He said that Congressman Clyde, after he refused to shake his hand, pulled out his cell phone and started recording him like he was some sort of criminal, that he had to document the interaction. That’s just where these guys are right now. I saw Clyde on the floor, scared for his life as all of us were, and I saw the brave officers who put their lives in front of ours and everyone else in that building. This is just no way to treat them.”

Brothers of white nationalist congressman apologize for his false claim insurrectionist was ‘executed’ by police

Two brothers of U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) went on national TV Thursday to apologize for his accusation this week that Capitol Police were “lying in wait” and “executed” a Trump insurrectionist, 35-year old QAnon believer Ashli Babbitt, on January 6.

“On behalf of the actual sane members of our family, which is everyone but Paul, we apologize," they said on CNN, to D.C. Officer Michael Fanone for their brother’s “despicable comments and disgraceful conduct through this whole incident.”

On Tuesday during a hearing on the January 6 insurrection Gosar, a white nationalist, demanded FBI Director Chris Wray release the name of the officer who killed Babbitt. Babbitt was attempting to break into the Speaker’s Lobby, a hallway in the Capitol just outside the House Chamber.

Calling her killing “disturbing," Gosar told Wray in front of cameras that Babbitt was “executed," which is false.
