Well, a couple of hundred years ago, artists sometimes painted very large, dramatic canvases, of historical or mythical events or even of dramatic landscapes, specifically for the purpose of going on tour to be exhibited for the wonder and admiration of people who paid an entrance fee to see them. And of course packed with enough detail to repay long and close study.
