From what I can tell, the function of Facebook is to make me aware of things I would rather not know about people I barely knew in high school or college.
Since my wife opted out of tracking on her Facebook account she has not been getting but 50% of photos which accompany the news feed displayed. She thinks its Facebooks way of punishing her by her opting out of tracking.
