Dr. Fauci has not flip-flopped at all. He has made recommendations in regards to a living, evolving entity. There are some who cannot comprehend anything capable of change, or adjusting methods to deal with those changes, whether good or bad, disease or even life itself. conservatives are like that.
Something republicans DON’T UNDERSTAND is that, as more information becomes available, you update, and often change, what you say. Since republicans DON’T BELIEVE in either Science or Honesty they think it is a foreign language.
When travelling up a hill, a trucker might advise shifting to a lower gear. When travelling on a straightaway, the trucker might advise shifting to a higher gear. When travelling in the rain, the trucker might tell you to slow down. When descending a steep hill, the trucker might advise shifting down. When a light turns yellow, the same trucker might suggest braking. When the light turns green, the trucker might tell tell you to step on the accelerator.
I wonder if Varvel would accuse the Trucker of flip-flopping?
Right wingers such as those Varvel panders to (and for all I know, may be one of) have serious difficulty adapting to the idea of something that’s an evolving situation. Maybe because they hate the idea of evolution at all? Hmm. Which is the cause? Maybe hating change CAUSES rightwingers? Hmm. I guess in Varvel still believes the Earth is flat, at the center of the universe, and the sun and moon chase each other across the sky, obscuring pinpricks in the fabric of the sky.

Fauci and the CDC were basically taking their cues from a living and evolving virus which the US didn’t see coming (at least not the Trump administration). Perhaps, if Hillary Clinton had won the electoral as well as the popular vote, she might have heeded China’s warning back in December 2019 that this Covid thing was serious and the other nations needed to start preparing. She certainly wouldn’t have disbanded the pandemic task force Obama set up during the Ebola outbreak the way Trump did. As for Fauci, Brix, the CDC, etc. they saw that the Covid virus was a tricky creature and evolved over time. They were the grownups in the room while Trump kept insisting the virus would magically disappear.
Sometimes, following the science can lead you astray — until you find the correct path after a diligent search. Dr. Fauci has changed his opinions as increasing evidence warrants it. This is the correct way, not an intellectual or moral weakness.
Never trust someone who, at the very start of a totally new and rapidly evolving situation, not only says they know exactly what to do but never changes their mind after that.
I’d be way more suspicious of Fauci if his stance had never changed.
