Semantics (“defund”) is not the question. The real problem is getting the police to do their job differently, more safely for the public in general, and more professionally. They are there ultimately to protect US… not to shoot first and ask questions later. If they are incapable of this – then lower the budget on equipment and put it into retraining. Tell police that every time they shoot someone – they will be suspended WITHOUT PAY until an investigation has proven that they did the right thing. That will make them hesitate twice before using their weapons except when absolutely necessary.
This appears to be a reference to the Defund activist shot in a drive-by at a party. Which still would have happened with or without police seeking the shooters later. Maybe turn it into a discussion of too many guns, which appears to have been how it happened.
Cops are doing jobs cops aren’t supposed to do. Crawling under a bridge to do a welfare check for example. Dealing with mental health issues is another. Defunding is the transfer of resources to help police do their real job. No one wants police gone.
Baghdad Bok continues to push that ignorant theme about defunding police, even though it’s been explained, over and over, that defunding is merely allocating funding to appropriate response agencies instead of the person who brings a gun into every situation.
The country has changed since 9/11. Our biggest threat today is domestic terrorism and white supremacists (as well as anti-gov’t militias). The police have been militarized. Some forget they’re peace keepers not soldiers.
The terms “defund” and “white privilege” almost got Trump reelected and the GOP control of the House. The Democrats should have forcefully denounced both terms and talked about “more effective policing” and “All are treated equally” initiative. Same concepts, but less red meat for GOP spin.
A fair representation of life as it is now lived, especially if you’re Black.
Justice Kagan recently noted that she’d like to see a reduction in the number of people shot dead for “reaching for non-existent guns”. There seems to be an abundance of policemen who should never be allowed anywhere near a gun. I’ll grant that the great majority of cops are “OK”, but given how large our police forces are, that still leaves thousands who at least claim to be threatened by Negro persons who are walking, or running, in the other direction.
Considering that this woman was probably shot while fleeing for her life from a hysterical cop who “mistook” her phone for a gun, I’m assuming you’re on the right side of justice for a change, Mr. Bok.
Bok worried about crime in the street. How about all the crime in executive board rooms across America? Crime by politicians? Crime by Congressmen? Crime by the ones who thousands of lives, not just the ones and twos.

Bok misses the chaos and insanity of 2016-2020.
Plus, for some reason, he doesn’t want police getting auxiliary help from mental health and animal control workers, et al.

Gee Chip, why a black woman and not a black man?
Too much of a reminder of why police reform is necessary?

If real life is any indicator, she probably got shot by the police who responded to the 911 call.

“Defund” and “abolish” must be exact equivalents in Bok’s thesaurus…

Note also that even in the cartoon, the police did not stop the violence.

actually police funding should go up… way up… but it should come with tons more oversight, expectations, training, qualifications and accountability.

Chip, your toon represents a false dichotomy. Who shot the woman? And if she summoned the police, were it not maybe the policeman who then shot her.
