When I was a youngster living in Chicago, I once heard on the radio that it was 9 PM, 90 degrees and 90% humidity. Now that’s consistent. And no AC in those days either.

I have a weather station and a NOAA regular tube rain gauge. They never agree. But close enough.

Meteorologists are the only ones who can get it wrong all the time and still have a job.

My weather app temp never agrees with my thermometer. My home is in what I call a cold sink. We are always a couple of degrees (F) cooler than what the temp is in town. In the spring when I drive through town and see that everyone’s property is snow free I still have a white lawn.

The thermometer on the fence registers 95 degrees at the 10 o’clock position? How hot are they expecting it to get?

Weather (not climate) is about the only safe topic for conversation anymore.

Hang a piece of rope outside. When it moves, it’s windy. When it gets wet, it’s raining.

Local weather forecasters never seem to agree?

I suspect there is a whole new type of person these days who always gets the weather from their weather app and never looks outside or experiences the weather itself.

Ah yes, the old days. I grew up in a town in a valley right on Michigan’s Gold Coast(the west side of the state) No one ever needed AC. But a few miles away, the temp could be 20 degrees warmer. Nothing like a breeze coming across the big lake to keep us cool. I usually had to wear a jacket on Fourth of July. We had a yuge beach, but not many kids went swimming in the big lake, because it was cold. The town owned a beach on another lake about 4 miles away. Which was warmer.

Growing up in the 50s and 60s in small town on Lake Michigan. Cool temps in town in the summer, high 60s to low 70s. Meanwhile, on my uncle’s farm about 10 miles from home, summer days of 80 degrees and up were not unusual.

Why it’s hotter in the city: They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot.

weather is so local, really, 5 weather instruments in the same small town won’t necessarily agree.

There is an episode of “Mad About You” in which they have heating problems in their apartment. The heat is stuck in either the kitchen or the bedroom (I forget which). Let us say the heat is stuck on in the kitchen. Their living room is between the other two rooms.

One spouse comes out of bedroom with jacket on – freezing and the other comes out of the kitchen – in a light summer shirt. They pass in the living room and switch who has the jacket so they can each go into the other room.

I often think of that episode. Upstairs in our house is much hotter than downstairs- in particular our office is always hot – all 4 seasons. I go upstairs and take off my sweatshirt (winter or summer) and put it aside. Then I come back downstairs and put it on as I come down.

Exception – we got a new air conditioner in the bedroom last summer as our dies, followed by the portable one we used to use in our living room or dining room also dying after we managed to carry it upstairs by lifting it step by step – so at the height of the pandemic we had to buy a new ac and have men come into our house/bedroom and install it. Scared the heck out of us under the circumstances. AC worked fine. This past winter we were absolutely freezing in the bedroom. I tried to figure out what was different than past – the ac! Aha, there are no louvers in it, so the holes for the air to come in and go out are completely open all year!! I made nice two layer flannel cover to put on it inside the house – could not get to it outside – and that worked.
