I go to bed early to read my Kindle, but I always fall asleep. My wife’s the opposite. She says she can’t go to sleep early, and stares at the ceiling for several hours.
Out of the 3 major networks, CBS, NBC, ABC…..their Late Night Line is pitiful. I used to love to watch Saturday Night Live…..I rather watch old videos of Johnny Carson on YOU TUBE, than these Late Night Hacks.
I understand Arlo’s point here. I used to feel that there was a narrow window of time where it was “acceptable” to go to bed. Too early and you appeared to be lazy and slept too much, and too late was a bit immoral, like what poorly behaved people did, from being out late drinking or carousing, etc. I’m not sure what the optimum time was supposed to be for sure, but I’d put it between 9:45 PM and 10:30 PM.
I remember the days when I had a more than full time job and then came home, had dinner, put the kids to bed, and then continued my home renovation work trying to make the place more livable. At 2300 EDST I’d get a beer and turn on Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann because that’s what was on, and then go to bed at midnight (Mrs. UFO would already be asleep). Became a huge fan of MHMH. Part of me is with Arlo: thank goodness those days are over. But another part of me wonders what happened to that idealistic young man who seemed to not know when to quit.

Nothing on worth staying up for.

That’s one of the fringe benefits of getting older…you don’t have to care what others think. Other than family, of course.

Early to bed and early to rise, means a man is OLD!

I go to bed 1 1/2 hours before my wife, she gets up 3-6 hours after I do.

Or is Arlo actually saying that it’s time for him to think about taking the “little blue pill”?

My wife stays up to watch the local “news”. I hit the sack and get up at 0500 to work out.

Hmmm, did Arlo have sex with Janis for the sake of appearances?

Got it, JJ., and agreed.
If I have to try to do anything to appear that there is some machismo remaining, it is not going to be staying up late.GregSearcy almost 3 years ago

I used to do a LOT of things for the sake of appearance… I’m much happier now that that’s over.

I still end with staying up late. Sometimes with insomnia added.
