Janis Ian posted a meme on FB to this effect (not an exact quote):
Extroverts may be ecstatic over the winding down of the Covid restrictions, but I’ve gone feral. If you want me to come out you’ll have to lure me with treats.
Viral epidemics emerge every few years. The Covid-19 pandemic is a particularly wide-spread one. Fortunate are some of us that vaccines were developed relatively quickly. It’s as if the vital hurricane stopped as the eye passed over, and the winds on the other side were thus lessened (as is so far hoped).
There’s good and bad in this. Good is that, although the human death toll is in the millions, things could have been much, much worse (that sounds so heartless, as I type it). Bad is that the situation became so politicized that foolish people acted stupidly in accepting terrible advice from sources unqualified to give sound advice.
The next epidemic could be a super-pandemic that sweeps like a full hurricane through the world, stubbornly resistant to vaccines. And if those who blandly resisted precautions today are still alive, and think their current snide reactions to scientific advice again are applicable — disaster on a huge scale is inevitable. Visualize the tragedy in India on a world-wide scale.
So mock those you think are overly cautious if you want. The need for their caution will eventually prove true. Don’t call them Cassandras.
This is real, but a lot less harmful than the whackos that refuse to wear masks or get vaccinated. So we should not hold it up as some kind of “they’re crazy too” equivalency.
Meet the fully vaccinated Frederick Theodore Rall, III, who would double mask even if he went outside, but still never go outside.Fixed it for you, Ted.
I lived and worked in Japan. Masking up when going outside, no matter your health, was not looked upon as something unusual. Now with zoom/teams/etc everywhere there will be remote/hybrid work. With everyone making deliveries there is no reason to go out. As an introvert, I’m doing well, as are many others. Why go out into a sea of germs?
It’s really, really hard to pinpoint what Rall’s commenting on, much less complaining about. Most intelligent, educated, experienced, rational, patriotic folks agree that (1) so-called Covid-19 Vaccine Passports are simple common sense to protect both individuals and society as a whole against the spread of the Covid-19 virus; (2) entering crowded stores, particularly those like Walmart which silently refuse to enforce local, state, and/or federal mandates and/or health warnings to wear masks in crowds lest a Covid-19-infected arrogant, dim-witted, ignorant, gullible vaccine-refusenik spreads the virus willy-nilly, can be dangerous, if not actually lethal; and (3) wearing double masks is no different than double-layering one’s children against the cold when sending them outside to play in the snow. In the meantime, I’m more than content to let the brash, foolhardy, dim-witted, ignorant, and gullible fools who think otherwise contract Covid-19 and eventually die ignominiously and ironically.
I’m not sure why you feel the need to make fun of the overly cautious by equating them to the plague carriers in red states. Seems that you are aiming at the wrong target there…
And after a year of constant risk of infection from a deadly disease, coupled with maniacs who are putting everyone at risk for political reasons, what we’re really seeing is a lot of traumatized people, who have acquired agoraphobia and social anxiety. At least those people not going anywhere aren’t hurting anyone!
Soooo terrible for people to care enough about others to still wear masks and avoid crowds even when vaccinated… pandemic safety procedure deniers should be happy that those people care more for them than they care for other people…
Guilty as charged. Well, partly, anyway. I intend to wear a mask when shopping or attending events for the rest of my life. Why? The seasonal flu cases dropped to almost nothing in 2020, that’s why. 1) I’m in the age bracket most threatened by the flu (as in, I’m old), and 2), the flu vaccine has never had impressive effectiveness rates.
Ted judging by the reaction to todays panel you struck a major nerve. Some real Fraidycats haunt these comics. Driving alone in your car masked up, put on a mask to talk on the phone because viruses are tiny. I SEE YOU !
I went to the local WallyWorld yesterday and for the 1st time in a year saw about half the shoppers were maskless. Walmart had signs up demanding everyone must wear one with a employee sitting by the door offering masks. Until that trip I’ve seen almost 100% compliance to mask mandates. I get my 2nd shot this week and have worn masks indoors for 15 months I want to lose the mask after the Vax as much as possible since global warming has brought Summer early to Central California that and our fine Governor is going to open the State in June. Gavin is facing a recall now so He is smoothing ruffled feathers over his handling of the pandemic and eating at the French Laundry.
FYI, Ted, I am fully vaccinated and I wear my mask when I go to the Gym, The Farmer’s Market and the park near my house. Until our local government says we are in Phase Four of reopening (meaning most of us here in DC are fully vaccinated) or I hear the all clear from the CDC I will be wearing my mask when I’m at the store, the gym, etc. That said, I had an awesome Easter with my vaccinated family where we shared an unmasked dinner and actual hugs. And when I’m sitting in the park where there aren’t a lot of people around, I take my mask off! I put it back on before I leave for the gym, but I am wearing my mask for the most part out of respect for those who haven’t yet gotten the vaccine. Also, many have gotten accustomed to this social distancing and are genuinely confused with the call to return to normal. But the human animal is a very adaptable species. And ultimately they will rejoin society as well. The end to this is coming, just not as quickly as we’d like.
Maskholes without vaccination certificates go the back of the Covid treatment line…and stay there. And to respond to Rall’s pointless tweet, fully-vaccinated people can still infect maskless and vaccine-less morons, and how did you count the ‘many people’? Sounds like an asinine question from one of AONN’s press conference stooges.
Biden, at the start of his administration, said he was asking Americans to wear masks for 100 days. He is now saying that it is a “patriotic responsibility” for Americans to wear masks indefinitely, even if they are vaccinated. This has absolutely no basis in science. Vaccines are highly effective and studies have suggested that they prevent not only infection but transmission. Outdoor transmission is also extremely low risk. There is no reason to believe a vaccinated person cannot be near another vaccinated person indoors, let alone near another person outdoors. This is just Big Government rampant safetyism running amuck.
Democrats seem to wildly misjudge how dangerous the virus really is — the chance that somebody with COVID must be hospitalized is between 1 and 5 percent, and yet 69 percent of Democrats believe that the number is more than 20 percent, and 41 percent believe that it is more than 50 percent. (New York Times 3/18)
I would like for 90% of the American adult population to get vaccinated….and the best way of convincing reluctant Americans to get vaccinated is to demonstrate that once vaccinated, they can live their normal lives. By communicating that being vaccinated makes no difference in anybody’s ability to go back to normal, Biden is acting recklessly.
