Speaking in general, not to this specific comic, sound is defined as vibrations that cause the eardrums to vibrate, sending a message to the brain of a sensation of hearing. Therefore, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, then, no, it does not make a sound.

To make it just right, he should have said, “Y’all didn’t hear nothin’”…

This used to be such a nice forest.

He is right. Saying you did not hear nothing is just another way of saying you did hear something. It is we the readers that can’t hear sound from drawings on a two dimensional sheet of paper. That is why the artist wrote the word crash in the drawing. Even though it is purely visual, our brains are programmed to imagine we hear a crashing sound when our eyes see the word crash.

Why do so many writers use a double negative in their sentences? A double negative makes it a positive. Are they not educated properly?

If they didn’t hear nothing, then they heard something.

Just on the local news here the other day, some one stole a whole load of new farm fence posts. Very valuable considering how the price of lumber has shot up. When the police finally caught up wth the culprit, it was a beaver who had taken all of them to build a beaver dam. I wonder if he was a aware of how valuable his dam was? Ps… no police charges were laid.
